CHAPTER 13

One, Two, Three. Dona’s voice rang in my ear. I felt like I was standing there, watching myself, and everyone else. I saw as all the women and girls at the party went running out onto the open beach, but I stayed down. I saw as the men and boys came out running from their own hiding place. Their arms filled with water balloons, their hands with a single water balloon in each, ready to throw. But the girls were just as fast. They had already begun throwing as the two groups collided together. I saw little kids shrieking in laughter, married couples chasing after each other. I saw my parents, doubled over in laughter, and I saw Josh run up behind them and break two balloons over their heads, soaking them. I saw many more people throwing balloons. It was truly a battle of the genders. From the looks of it, it was a close fight. I wanted to join, and help the girls conquer, but I couldn’t, as much as I wanted, I couldn’t. I was right handed, and my right wrist was like a smudged campus of blues, purples, greens and yellows.

In a desperate attempt to help us win, I ran over to the house and grabbed the hose, I pulled it out as far as I could and ran into battle. I sprayed anyone in sight and joined in on the laughter and fun. I screamed in laughter as I felt a cold water balloon hit my back. I spun around to spray the person who had hit me, but I was quickly swept off my feet, the hose falling to the ground. I couldn’t help but let out a scream as I was lifted off the ground, but that soon turned into a laugh as I found out Liam was the one holding me. I ran my fingers through his wet hair. Before we both knew it, Josh had run towards us and grabbed the hose at Liam’s feet, he sprayed us. He was sneaky. It made me jump and Liam had let go of me, I almost fell but his hand on my back, steadied me. “JOSH!” I screamed, and he dropped the hose. Liam and I chased after him. Laughing. But then they both caught me by surprise. Josh stopped in his tracks and I ran square into his back, he spun around and then spun me around too, slipping his hands under my arms. As Liam caught up, he picked my legs up off the ground, and I hung there like a pig roasting over a fire. I squirmed in their grasps, but they just kept on laughing, and I couldn’t help but laugh too. They held on to my tight, and ran towards the water. They waded in waist deep, my shirt hanging down, just toughing the water. “FOR THE GUYS!” Josh screamed and then they swung me back and then I was flying through the air.

The cold water hit me like a ton of bricks, but as I got used to it, I felt the sand beneath my feet, and I pushed up out of the water. I faced Josh and Liam and gave them a playful stare. “She’s all yours,” Josh said quickly, giving Liam a slight pat on the back, then turning around and running out of the water. Liam glanced at me, then pulled off his shirt and threw it up onto shore; he dove into the water, and came to meet me. As his head popped out of the water, beside me, I playfully pushed him back down. He came back up, sputtering water everywhere. “That was for turning against me,” I said to him, reaching down to help him to his feet. “Hey,” he said, “Last time I checked I'm a guy and you’re a girl, and this is a battle of the genders. I had no choice!” he paused, “Please forgive me.” I smiled, a sneaky smile, “Oh, you will find a way to pay me back later, but first,” I said, glancing up at shore, “I think my team won.”

I ran away from him before he could catch me. He chased me up on shore, and as I glanced back at him, I ran into a rather tall and very strongly built man. I saw Liam stop in his tracks, before I even got the chance to look up. I saw the expression on his face; he looked terrified. I slowly looked up at the man I had run into, “Hi Daddy,” I said, looking up into my father’s blue eyes; it was almost like looking in a mirror, everyone always said I looked most like him. “Hey Brooklyn,” he said slipping an arm around me. For a second I thought that he hadn’t seen Liam playfully chasing me, but I got my hopes up too soon. “Liam,” Dad said, giving him a stern stare. Liam looked like he was about to cry, the terror and fear taking over him, “S-Sir,” he managed to mutter. I could see him gulp hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down. I turned my attention back to my father, “So who won?” I asked. “Well I think it was a tie…” “What?” I said, and used this moment and sentence to slip out of his grasp. I acted like I was really anxious to know who won, but all I really wanted to do was get away from that moment. I ran up to Josh, “Go get Liam,” I whispered to him, barely stopping to even get the words out.
