(Steven's POV)
*...Who's next to die, Steven? Do you even care at this point?*
A voice as I looked up and saw I was under the blood red sky again. I must be asleep. And that voice...I knew all too well who it was and I hated it.
"I don't owe you an explanation, Greg. You're dead. You made your choice when you sided with Pearl and tried to turn me and the others in. I don't have to explain my actions to a traitor, much less one who isn't anything more than fuel for me now." I said as my father went silent as another voice spoke.
*But what about me? What did I have to do with this?!? You killed me for no reason, you monster!!!!" The voice of Daisy screamed as I chuckled.
"Excuse me? I never intended to kill you. Remind me who it was that pulled a knife out and drew first blood? And tried to contact Pearl? Your demise is your own fault, Daisy. I don't have any sympathy for you at all." I replied.
*....Steven....what do you plan to do once you're done with Pearl and the other Gems? Are you so blinded by revenge that you didn't plan long term? You can't keep killing forever...* Daisy said as I said nothing in reply.
*....And what about Connie? What do you plan to do with her once you've beaten Pearl? Kill her too?"* Dad asked as I felt myself waking up...
*Back in the real world...*
(Steven's POV)
I woke up to the smell of breakfast being cooked. On my way to the kitchen, I noticed Connie had done some cleaning up as well since there was a vacuum and broom out. Once I was in the kitchen, I saw Connie cooking breakfast.
"Morning. I figured you'd like to eat something that doesn't involve blood for once." She said with a chuckle. I couldn't even be mad at her for that remark. It's not like she was wrong. Sitting at the table, she placed the plate in front of me: Eggs, two strips of bacon and some pancakes.
I began eating and it was amazing. It was like a part of myself I had forgotten about had come back to me as I ate. I had honestly forgotten how good actual food tastes.
"Thank you. I...I forgot how good real food tasted after all that's happened to me. Thank you, Connie." I said as she smiled and sat down with me.
"You're welcome, Steven. It's good to see you smile again." She said as I didn't even notice I had been smiling.
"Eh...well....anyway....have you heard from the others yet?" I asked.
"Heard from Daniel earlier. Said things were pretty quiet according to Bismuth. It's rare that we get days like this where nothing is really happening, so we should enjoy it. Or at least use it to catch up, you know?" She replied as I looked at her.
"Well. It'd be the perfect time to check in with Homeworld. Spinel is probably losing her mind still. Best check in to put her at ease." I replied as Connie sighed.
"Steven. Can I ask you something?" She asked as I sighed too.
"You can try. Go ahead." I replied as she took a deep breath and asked.
"Steven. What do you plan to do after all of this is over? When we take care of the Crystal Gems and take them out of our lives for good. You know as well as I do that things will never go back to the way they were. And you can't just drift for the rest of your life, killing anyone who looks at you the wrong way. Did you ever stop for one minute, forget the pain and think about what comes after?" She asked as I was silent for a moment before giving her an answer.
"Honestly? No. I don't know what's next for me after all of this is over. Even after the Gems are dealt with, going back to the Temple just wouldn't feel right. To be honest, staying in Beach City altogether wouldn't feel right. As much as I hate them, The Gems and Dad were what kept me tied here for the most part. Well...them and you." I replied as she smiled and placed her hand on mine. That warmth of her hand.....it felt welcoming and full of love, two things I hadn't felt in years.
"You know, I was thinking: When this is all over, why don't we both leave together and start fresh somewhere else? Nothing is keeping me here anymore either except you. And since you said that I'm what's keeping you here, then why don't we both leave together? We're old enough now and responsible enough." Connie said as I chuckled.
"I seem to remember an idea like this years ago that resulted in Alexandrite chasing us down." I said with a smirk as Connie rolled her eyes and chuckled.
"You still won't let me forget that, will you? They scared me too, you know! And for your information, I was grounded for a month as a result. So you aren't the only one who got punished." She replied as we both laughed. And it honestly felt good to laugh with someone again.
But our laughter soon ended when there was a knock at the door. Getting up to see who it is, Connie looked through the peephole on the door and gasped before looking at me.
"Who is it?" I said, summoning my claw for a fight as Connie whispered.
"It's Bismuth. And Amethyst and Pearl are with her." She said with worry in her voice as I summoned my claw. As much as I wanted to rip into Pearl, I didn't want to blow Bismuth's cover.
"I'll go around back to keep watch." We heard Bismuth say as Connie smiled at me, knowing what Bismuth was up to.
"Be careful, OK?" I said as Connie mouthed "I love you" before I left out the back door where Bismuth was waiting with a smile.
"Get moving to the hideout. We'll keep them busy here." She said as I nodded and used my controlled corruption wings to fly off to the hideout as I looked back and saw Bismuth head inside to back Connie up.
I hope they'll be OK....
Will they be OK? See ya next chapter!
