i waited for you because i knew that you'd wait for me too
jirin ran through the house, the letter still clutched in her hand tightly. she came to a stop in front of johnny and mark, who were arguing over a watermelon piece.
johnny took one look at the girl's puffy eyes and tear-stained cheeks and slapped mark on the back, a signal to shut up.
mark frowned and put a hand on jirin's shoulder, "i'm guessing you found out."
jirin was too distraught to reply to the question. right now she needed one person, and he was nowhere to be found.
"where's doyoung?" she asked with a shaky voice and both boys shared a worried look.
"um, he'll be home soon jirin, why don't you go watch a movie on the couch. we have a few cartoons you might like," johnny said, trying to distract her.
jirin's eye started twitching, they were babying her again, "johnny. i asked for doyoung," her voice was a bit stronger and johnny sighed.
"don't say we didn't warn you. he's at the bar. he's never not there actually," mark told the girl and patted her shoulder.
jirin ran out of the house, the letter in one hand and her shoes barely on her heels. in this moment, she wanted to feel his arms around her and for him to tell her that everything was okay.
she needed him.
when she found him, doyoung was already standing outside of the bar, half-drunk and in no position to walk home by himself.
as she slowly appeared in front of him, doyoung truly thought that he was seeing a ghost. he opened his eyes wide and stretched out a hand to caress her cheek, "am i seeing things?" he said in a whisper as the tears flowed down just with the mere sight of jirin.
jirin was crying again too and she hugged doyoung without hesitation, "i'm sorry. i was so wrong to leave you here alone. i promise i'll never leave again."
doyoung smiled and hugged her waist tightly, missing the feeling, "it's okay, i waited for you because i knew you'd do the same for me," he kneeled down he wasn't towering over his girl.
"you could go to the ends of the earth and i'll miss you, but at the end of the day i know that you'll come back to me. our love is stronger than that and more than anything, you gave me a chance to be able to change and become a better version of myself for you," he breathed out.
jirin smiled through her tears, "i love you, i always have."
doyoung nuzzled his nose with hers, "and i've always loved you more."
jirin scrunched her nose and let out a light laugh, as doyoung turned around and motioned for her to get on his back. he gave her a piggyback ride all the way to the park by the base and set her down on the grass, taking a seat next to her.
after a moment of silence, doyoung asked, "you found out? about jaehyun."
jirin just nodded, her hand finding his in the dark and holding it for comfort. she didn't get to speak however, because doyoung continued.
"i don't want you to think that it's your fault. jae was a troubled boy and you were the person holding all of his broken pieces together. if anything, you were helping him get better. but you needed to take care of yourself too and you made the right decision by leaving, even if it was so sudden," doyoung told her, "all we can do now is cherish the memories we have with him."
jirin felt a little better with doyoung's reassurance, "he deserves so much more from the world," she whispered.
doyoung nodded as she continued, "i never knew, but he was the one that always came to my university to try and say hi. i wish he would've said something to me. we would've been friends a lot sooner."
doyoung glanced at jirin and pulled her into a hug, letting her head rest on his chest, "you're an angel jirin, most people wouldn't think like that after all the things that have happened."
"will you pinky promise me?" jirin asked in a small voice.
doyoung tilted his head, "what is it?"
"promise me that when you feel down or something's troubling you, you'll tell me and we'll figure it out together. don't bottle up your feelings inside anymore, i don't want to ever lose you," she asked of him.
doyoung nodded and intertwined their pinkies, "you as well princess."
jirin nodded and placed a kiss on doyoung's lips, lingering for a bit. she had missed kissing him so much while away.
doyoung smiled sweetly, "you and your fruit flavored lip gloss," he noted and kissed her again.
the kiss was one long overdue. it also sealed a promise that they both made silently to each other: to never hurt each other ever again.
jirin's hands found its way into his hair, tugging gently as he kissed her the same way he always did: with love. doyoung's hands weren't traveling over her body as usual, but stayed wrapped around her waist.
he was focusing on making jirin feel loved with simple sweet kisses and when he pulled away, he knew he had accomplished his mission.
jirin stared after him with a dazed look of bliss in her eyes. he moved her onto his lap and hugged her from behind tightly.
both of them looked up at the stars in the night sky and back at each other, "i was so foolish back then," doyoung shook his head at himself.
jirin frowned, "what do you mean?"
"i can't believe that i broke up with you, i was foolish. i never knew that keeping you by my side was safer. i was so lost for that year without you, i had no idea how to handle a breakup because you were the first one i had ever loved. on that day that you almost saw me, i was fully intending to plead with you to take me back, but i didn't. it felt too selfish of me to do that so i walked away in tears. i never imagined that i would see you a few hours later back at the base," he confessed.
jirin took his face into her hands gently. she placed a kiss on his forehead, "we all make mistakes, and you did it because you were worried for me. i didn't understand back then, but i do now. what matters the most is that we've both grown and now we're together."
doyoung nodded and kissed her lips again, "i want you forever."
"you are my entire world, kim doyoung."
stop i'm so emo.
