There are two kinds of people that exist. Ones that you can see straight through and others that are harder to read. You never thought there would be a third kind: people who you can't read at all. It was already Thursday and you were still stuck. Stuck because Kita showed no signs of letting up his identity, personality etc. Each practice, though three hours long each and some days even longer, you and Kita would enter in some kind of staring contest but haven't spoke a peep to each other.
Other than that, practice itself was not as bad as you had previously thought it was since the managerial duties were quite simple and straightforward. You were also getting used to all the rules of volleyball and taking down mental notes about it.
Besides Kita, the other dudes were really inviting and warming up to you as well, making you feel a lot more comfortable around them. The Miya twins, though cocky at first, you found that they're actually just kind of immature but friendly enough. Suna is just always gloomy looking but he means no harm. Coach was intimidating as always and you were probably just going to have to get used to it if you were to stay.
"Mina!" you call. "Can you refill everyone's water bottles while I pick up some balls?" Most of the guys were taking a break from their serving drill when you hear, "Y/N, watch out!!"
From the periphery of your vision, you see a ball heading straight towards your head. If you try to move now it'll be too late-
BAM!
You held up your arm and had closed your eyes for impact but the ball never made contact with you. You open your eyes and in front of you stands Kita, who had blocked what could've been a dangerous blow to the face. You stand there, too shocked to say anything immediately.
Before you can say anything to thank him though, he turns around and tells you, "You should really stop wearing glasses when we practice."
His voice sends a chill down your spine and it seems like the whole gym freezes, watching you and Kita. The presence he has is freaking insane. However, you steel yourself because you won't let anyone talk down on you like that.
"I definitely could've stopped that, thanks. I have this thing, don't know if you've heard of them, called reflexes," you retort sarcastically, crossing your arms. You hear a couple of sharp intakes of breath from the rest of the players. You're suspecting this dude never gets talked back to in the way you are now.
But he doesn't even hesitate and adds, "Then, what would you have done if you got hit and a piece of glass penetrated your eye?"
Oof, he got a point there. Any way you look at it, he definitely prevented a bad accident from happening and there's no knowing what would've went down if he wasn't there to stop the ball. You drop your arms in defeat and say begrudgingly, "I- yeah, I guess you're right. Thanks for the advice."
The gym is silent for a few more long seconds before Aran comes running over, Mina trailing behind. "Sorry about that Y/N. That was my fault, I totally mishit the ball."
Offering a reassuring smile, you reply, "It's fine, nothing happened, right? Don't worry about it."
You turn back to Kita, who stares at you a second longer before both he and Aran go towards the rest of the team.
"You sure you're ok, Y/N? That was kind of an intense interaction between you and the captain," she says quietly.
Hold up. Captain?? "Wait, you never told me Kita was the captain!"
She blinked. "I assumed you already knew."
"The dude hasn't spoken to me all week until now, how would I have known?? Ugh I can't believe I talked back to him like that.."
Yeah, there's no way you thought he would want you as a manager now, not that you ever really wanted to be.
Coach calls over you and Mina after practice.
He gives a quick debriefing and then lets you both go after saying, "Tomorrow the whole team and I will decide if we want to hire you both on as managers and let you know. See you then, you're dismissed."
You're already thinking you won't be offered the position after that situation with Kita earlier. Guess Mina will have to handle the team entirely on her own. Sighing, you think that tomorrow can't come and go quicker.
