Fire. She smelled it. Its suffocating scent fills her nose. The white noise of crackling flames, the burning of wood, rung in her ears. She could feel the heat scorching her skin, slowly consuming her body-
“Wake Up!” something forcefully pulls her from warm sheets and drops her on the floor. Groaning she sits up “Finally, get dressed and come down to the dining hall for breakfast.” rubbing her eyes and standing up the girl stretches.
Walking to the door she locks it and walks back to her bed. Unlatching the trunk at the end of her bed, she grabs her clothing and strips out of her pyjamas. Putting on her new clothes, an oversized dark green hoodie, black leggings, and knee high brown boots. Pulling her long black hair into a messy fishtail braid, she unlocks the door and leaves for the dining hall.
Entering the dining hall, she looks for the table that her friends are at. Walking over to them, a tall, elegant, blond haired, and grey eyed girl calls over to her “ Welcome back to the land of the living Bianca.”
“ Gee thanks Alyss, really nice of you to drag me out of bed like that.” Bianca remarks sarcastically. The girls laugh good naturedly at each other and Bianca sits down and fills her plate with some fruit, and her beloved coffee. After about 20 minutes and 3 more cups of coffee, People, including Bianca’s friends ( 2 boys, and a girl) the other 3, Bianca, Alyss, and Her Closest friend, a short, brown hair and eyed boy, named Will.
Will and Bianca were good friends partly because they sat next to each other in all their lessons, as with the rest of the ward members, both were orphans. Both were left at the Ward doorstep when they were babies, but the biggest thing they had in common was they could both climb.
The two spent days climbing around the castle, racing; seeing who could reach the top of the clock tower that always chimed a little later than it was supposed to (not sure if there actually is one but it’s here now), sneaking into the kitchens to steal the fresh baked pies that head chef Master Chubb had made. They were practically joined at the hip, you would never find one without the other.
Over the years of being together the two have caused enough mischief to sabotage an entire cavalry. However a very important day is quickly approaching the two. The choosing day. The choosing day was meant for children of the ward to be accepted into learning the path that they chose to work.
Most children with Parents either arrange a place in the schools, or teach their child about what they do for a living. The Ward children, as orphans, go through a process of choosing. The 15 year old will step in front of the craftmasters and ask for an apprenticeship in the field of work they chose, very rarely are they not accepted, and are sent off to work as a farmer.
Fortunately Bianca doesn’t have to go through this process, because she has been accepted to study as a healer with the Tribe of Curandeiros, a nation known for the legendary healing skills. On the downside the tribe is very far south of Araluen, meaning that she may not see Will and the others until she becomes a fully fledged healer.
Of course she was also worried for Will, as he wanted to be a knight, supposedly like his father. When he was left on the doorstep, there was a note with him saying that his father was a hero. Will automatically assumed that his father was a knight. However to get into battleschool you need to have a certain physical requirements. Will was stronger than he looked, but Bianca had a feeling that he was a little on the shorter side and it wouldn't make it.
She was worried that he wouldn’t get accepted into battleschool and would be sent to work on a farm. She was also worried that he might forget her, she was gonna be gone for 5 years after all. She didn’t want to leave the boy she grew to love as her brother, but the chance of learning from the Curandeiros is too rare to let pass by.
The 3 of them finally left the dining hall, “ Sorry guys, but I have to go to the library, I promised a younger girl in our dorms to help her study. See you later!” Alyss told them before giving Bianca a hug, and walking in the opposite direction.
As he did everyday, Will walked with Bianca in the direction of the medical wing, as he always did. Once the duo reach the medical wing, they pass a quick goodbye and a short hug before separating. Will walked toward the courtyard in castle Redmont, while Bianca stepped into the wing; putting on her apron, she washed her hands and went to work making medicine.
~Time Skip~
Sighing out of relief Bianca sat down and wiped the sweat from her brow.
She had been tending to some of the boys from battleschool. They had hand-to-hand combat that day and from the looks of it, that did not end well for them.Olivia, one of the nurses working that day approached her “ Good work today Bianca! Go back to your room and get some rest, you worked hard today.” Bianca gave her a tired grin and voiced her thanks.
Groaning, she slowly got up out of the chair. Taking off her apron, she walked back to her room at the ward. Kicking off her shoes, Bianca flops down on the bed. A few minutes later, Alyss comes in to find her sprawled out on the bed.
“ Bianca,” Alyss told her, “get up, it's time for dinner.” rolling off her bed Bianca stands up and slips her shoes back on. Walking out the door With Alyss, chatting quietly, the girls run into Lady Pauline, head of the diplomatic Corps at Redmont castle.“ Hello Alyss, Bianca, how are you on this fine evening? “ Lady Pauline gracefully greets the two. Both girls greet Lady Pauline in return. The 3 chat for a while, walking in the direction of the dining hall. Lady Pauline left the girls to go back to her office, but not before complementing Bianca on something that would give her the wake-up call of a lifetime. “ Oh before I leave, Bianca congratulations on getting to go and study with the tribe of Curandeiros, you are very lucky to have such an experience that very few get to see.”
Bianca Froze at the comment, but very quietly replied “ Thank you Lady Pauline.” ‘ I was so busy working that I forgot that I would leave in a week!’ The girl mentaly slapped herself for being so forgetful. ‘ I still have to pack!’ sitting down next to Will, the two talk and laugh with the others at their table. Dinner was going well until Horace, a friend of Bianca’s, snarkily made a comment about how Will avoided him during the day.
“ Are you scared Will? Scared that I will pound you into the ground?” He taunted. Will took a deep breath. Bianca put a hand on his shoulder, keeping him from saying something stupid and regreting it later. “ Yeah that’s what I thought. You need your girlfriend to keep you in check.” Horace was able to get a rise out of him. Abruptly standing up, Will calmly said, “ She is not my girlfriend. The closest we will be is siblings. Nothing more.” Will then walked out of the dining hall.
