Kitty POV: I wake up in a strange room completely alone. It was terrifying. Then I hear the door open so instinctively pull the duvet up over my head and pretend to be asleep.
"She's here. But she's sleeping" someone whispers.
"Leave her rest Jane" a familiar voice whispers. Anna! I shift around a bit to pretend to be just waking up and then sit up.
"Never mind that then" she chuckles, walking over with Jane.
"Hey. Are you hungry?" She asks and I nod. I was absolutely positively starving.
"Well me and Anna were just about to make dinner. Want to help us?" I nod and follow them downstairs. There were 3 others down there.
"Guys this is Katherine. Katherine meet Catherine, Anne and Catherine"
"Just call me Lina"
"I think Kat would suit you" Anne says and I just nod. Just agree with everyone.
"Well Kat let's get cooking" Jane says and I smile, following her over to where Anna was chopping vegetables.
"Here. I'll show you" she says and I shake my head, stepping back.
"It's okay. You're safe. I won't hurt you" she puts the knife down and holds her hands out, palms facing up.
"Look. Why don't we start slow? Just by looking at the knife. Then when you're ready try holding it. Then I'll show you how to slice the veg" she was so patient. I nod and look at the knife before tentatively reaching out and touching the handle. It felt cool and smooth.
"There we go. I won't let you get hurt again" I nod and pick it up.
"There! See? It's okay. Are you okay with me standing behind you and holding your hands to guide you through it? Or would you be more comfortable copying me when I demonstrate it?" Anna says softly and I think for a minute.
"Can you just demonstrate please?" I ask and she nods.
"That's perfectly fine. Do what I do okay?" I nod and stand beside Anna as we chop the vegetables. She did it so neatly. Mine looked clumsy and uneven.
"You're doing great Kitty. Try angling it like this" she shows me and I copy.
"Yeah! Just like that!" I try chopping and this time it looked much better.
"Brilliant! You're becoming a natural at this" Anna says and I smile as I keep going. This was easy now. We get everything chopped and I go talk to Anne. My cousin. We'd never met but now was my chance.
"Hi" she looks up and smiles.
"Hey. It's great to finally get to meet you" she pulls over a chair and pats it. I sit down and Lina chuckles.
"Anne has been non stop about how excited she is to meet you" she says and Anne nods.
"And Anna has been talking about how excited she was to get to see you again"
"Yeah I was" Anna says, smiling at me.
"So I don't get it. How come I was the last wife but got here before you?" Cathy says and I shrug.
"We all showed up out of order. Cathy showed up first. Then me. Then Lina. Then Anna. Then Anne and then Kat" Jane says and I just nod. This was all so weird and new.
"Steak is almost ready. So are the chips Anna can you do the salad?"
"Sure. Kitty wanna help?" I nod and stand beside Anna as we chop the veg in comfortable silence. Her hand brushes off mine and I feel all funny and tingly. But in a good way. A noise outside makes us all look up and Anna is first to investigate, coming back with a letter.
"It's addressed to all of us"
