Summer nights. The last one before the last year of high school. The sun begins to set causing explosions of pink, orange, and yellow to flow across the sky line. A light breeze brushes its way through the trees in our tiny village.
Families are together panicking and getting things ready for the first day tomorrow. Everyone expect Frankie and sarah. The two sixteen year olds drown in the sight of the leaves changing and the scent of a burning out BBQ a few houses over. They sit on their balconies perfectly aligned with each other. Sarah sits completely compelled by her favorite book once again. Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets.
Frankie sits across from her lightly strumming his guitar creating perfectly light background noise to their impeccable moment. Glancing up from his guitar strings he notices how amazing his best friend looks in this simple moment.
Frankie and sarah had know each other since they were just four years old. All those years considered of so many amazing moments, and insane happy memories. Including when people thought they were together, they had talked about it in the past but nothing ever came of it since every time they would end up in fits of laughter. The feelings people always accused them of having never came about for them. They were happy.
Now in this moment he's looking looking her and can't help but loose control over the smile spreading across his face. Her eyes rise from her book and connect with his as she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. "What?...what are you looking at?" Frankie shakes his head as his smile widens. "Nothing...its just..." "Just what Frankie?" "You're just so beautiful you know". She smiles at frankie and sets her book down on the balcony edge. "Umm frankie are you ok?" Frankie just stares at her for a moment as confusion runs over his face. It takes a second for him to realize how what he said must have sounded. "What?...no not like that. I just mean you've grown up to be a beautiful person inside and out. I mean we've known each other for twelve years and i got to watch you grow up. We've gone from me saving you in a tree house to you being this intelligent, amazing, smart, and imensly beautiful young woman. I saw that...and in a year we will be going to college. You are going to study English literature and business and eventually run your own publishing company, and me. Well I'm going to study music and get my music out there. We have so many more memories to come. I just can't wait you know". Sarah leans on to her balcony and just smiles. Her eyes lit up and said a thousand words.
She stands up straight and looks off at the sunset behind their houses. "Only one more year of this view. Then we will be living together in college. Introducing each other to new friends and boyfriends and girlfriends. Helping each other through break ups. Then there's engagements and weddings, and pregnancy and babies, and of course holidays. I can't wait for the rest of our lives....i know your dad isn't around and you say you don't care but i think you should know that i know for a fact that if he was here he would be so insainly proud of you. Just like i am". Frankie grins and matches her posture. "Life is definitely going to be amazing for both of us. I just know it". "Frankie. Can you promise me one thing?" "Sure anything". "No matter what changes. We will always have this spot right here". She squeezes at her balcony edge and looks at him clearly trying to hold back tears. "Always sarah. I promise". She releases her balcony and breaths a sigh of relief before picking up her book. They both share a small smile before she blows him a kiss and heads inside.
Sarah closes her curtains and shuts off her light leaving Frankie completely alone. Looking up at the sky he takes a deep breath and whispers "always here". He smiles and heads in to his own room. The sky gets dark rapidly and the balconys are left only with their memories and the late summer breeze. If only they knew then how everything was about to change and nothing was ever going to be the same again.
