Here I am in the woods walking towards what I believe to be civilization with no real idea of how far I must go or what I may find. I figure I have about two and a half hours before the Dr's status report is expected and they will begin to question his delay. Thirty minutes go by and I come to the edge of the woods. All I see is farmland and some buildings off in the distance, so I enter the field heading towards the buildings. It's a potato farm and they are loading a shipment. I hear someone say they will be in Los Angeles in three hours. I hopped on to the open bay of the cargo truck unseen.
The three-hour trip gave me time to think about my new reality. They will be looking for me so I can't go home, where was I going to hide, how would I survive, did they implant a location chip in me? My life as I knew it was in a free fall. I couldn't get past those thoughts for a while. I started thinking about going back to negotiate some kind timeline for a return to normal life per se. I decided to hide in plain site with the homeless until I figured out my next best move.
First, I needed to get out of that guard's uniform and find different clothing. I did day labor work the next day, but my only thoughts were how to get my life back. I can't do this anymore; I spent the next week miserable because of my situation and I decided to deal with it straight on. I have never backed away from the hard stuff before and now realize my only move is to return. I should have read the fine print on the contract I signed in the first place and they did give me a "second chance" at a normal life. Who knows maybe it will work out, I've always enjoyed a challenge.
