Eris never screamed. She never cried and she always sang.
Her song was one of sassiness and spice. It was full of life and she didn’t let anyone dim her brightness. But that scream was the scream of pain. The scream of death at its grip and as I flapped my wings faster, I heard the blood in my veins hum loudly, the siren call louder than anything else in my world now.
Eris had more power than me. She was immortal, but if she was here… then she could die because our siren blood automatically made us mortal. I wasn’t tied down to Scamper’s ribbon, but I could still die because of my mermaid blood. For once, I was glad that Ioannis hadn’t been awake to see my wings. Because to fall in love with the incarnation of death, who also happened to be a mermaid hybrid… he’d freak out and run away.
With good reason. Sirens were never signs of anything good. We were signs of trouble, of luring and of devouring. We had the voice of angels, the beauty of goddesses and sculpted to perfection. We also had fangs and an insatiable hunger to lure victims. It was what pulled me to become the grim reaper in the first place. But I had chosen it to execute justice, not for lust or for any other selfish purpose.
I finally make it into the prison and when I find Magelion using thunderclouds to trap the wolves, I whistle and they run towards me. I shift into my normal form and they freeze, shaking when they recognize me. These wolves had been tainted by Evangeline’s magic. I howled at them and the spell they were in ended, causing them to run away. Magelion grins when he sees me and I nod at him.
“I haven’t seen you in ages, Sky.”
“Well don’t get too happy, You all interrupted my sleep,” I unleash my scythe and whistle at Evangeline who stops from attacking my sister and Eris looks at me, her eyes watery and the blood in her dark robe starting to glisten.
“Skylar Chandlerton. I thought you were dead,” Evangeline muses and I glare at her.
“That’s where you’ll be tonight,” I snarl at her, immediately launching myself at her, calling forward the fog. She lashes out, but becomes confused and starts slashing the air blindly. When I strike my scythe at her, her hair begins to tumble down. She screams, running in the fog while trying to find me. I run to my sister and her metal claws are half torn, revealing her broken fingers and she looks at me.
“S-Sky?” I help her up and put a hand on her wrist, causing her hands to renew and for her metal claws to place themselves again. Eris looks a bit better after my touch and she grins at me.
“Sorry for the staff, but you hate singing and Emira works best with me,”
“You little witch,” I grin wickedly, clearing the fog and revealing our enemy with a long strand of hair and most of her chopped haphazardly. She glares at me and screams, the scream so loud that makes Eris wince.
“She looks like a fashion disaster now. Shall we get rid of her?”
The darkness inside me sings loud and clear with one word that pushes me forward effortlessly, one song and one beat I had in common with her.
Yessss. Do it.
When we launch ourselves at her, she summons her own magic sending a cool blast of ice towards us. Eris immediately burns the ice shards and Evangeline keeps throwing ice daggers at us. I keep slicing them and when Evangeline chants an incantation to bring her dragon tattoo, the huge dragon pops out and flies over us before spitting fire.
I grab Eris’s arm and immediately disappear, leaving fog in our wake and when I turn, I find Magelion shooting thunderclouds towards Evangeline. But there’s a smaller figure that chokes Evangeline and when I remember that Yia Yia still exists, I run for her before Evangeline stabs her. The old lady tumbles towards me and I help her upright and when I look for Eris, she’s throwing fire orbs at her.
“You silly gods can’t stop me!” she laughs evilly and Eris only grins.
“You forget we’re not gods… but goddesses,” Eris says and when she whistles, the sound glazes Evangeline’s eyes as she slumps forward. She covers her ears and Magelion seems unfazed by her spell. The dragon charges towards her and when the red feathers appear right in front of her, Jamie grabs the dragon by the teeth and struggles to shove it back. He looks at us, straining and nods, winking at Eris.
“Didn't expect to see the siren queen here."
"You idiot! What are you doing here?" Eris hissed at him and he strained to push the dragon back, his strength starting to waver.
"Get out of here. I’ll hold it back,”
“Thorne. Now’s not the time for theatrics,” Eris declares, summoning her fire and the dragon thrashes against his grip before it spits fire, causing Jamie to expand his wings before the dragon pulverizes us. It roars and destroys the dungeon, sailing high in the air and begins to spit fire outside of it.
Stars, we had more trouble now. Jamie looks at us, horrified and then just shrugs.
“We’re meant to die one way or another, right?” I slap him in the face and hiss at him.
“You idiot! You don’t ever die!!”He scratches his head and smiles.
“Oops! I had forgotten about that. Though, I must admit I did think I was going to die and the sight of the dragon does look magnificent and-” he squawks and disappears when Eris launches herself at him furiously.
“He left us here!” I scan the sky, looking for the dragon and when I see a flicker of red feathers and the dragon heading toward Ludven, toward Ioannis and the coffee shop, that’s when I begin to run.
Because if I don’t get back in time, I’ll lose him too.
The Chandlerton sisters seem to have finally fixed their differences and have temporarily gotten rid of Evangeline. Jamie saved Eris and Skylar but quickly disappears before he cna explain his motives for helping them. Where is the dragon going and will Skylar be able to save everyone on time?
