When creation first began, the mortals fell into temptation over the forbidden fruit. As gods, we got kicked out of heaven and onto hell for ambition and for our sins. I felt like I was doing both. I was too close to biting into the forbidden fruit and to getting myself kicked out of the heavens.

All because of Maia Tolan. My best friend since I was in diapers. The goddess I was willing to throw everything away for. But I couldn’t tell her that. Not when I am busy thinking about what it would be like if we were more than friends. If I could officially court her, not hiding in fields of clouds and getting caught by Maia’s servants.

I felt irritated as we’re walking because I was going to tell her then. I was going to tell her that I love her. I’ve waited too long and one day, she’s going to choose Der over me and that scared me more than the Harbinger. Maia approved of him, but I never did. Was it because he was also going for Maia? Or because there was something about him I didn’t like? He was okay to be an angel guard, but there was something about him that didn’t sit well with me.

Maia was looking at the Pellan trees, their big purple petals falling over us and she looked so radiant under the moonlight that I wanted to capture this moment. I knew the mortals captured memories in these things called photographs, but how they did that was still a mystery. As we got closer to the conservatory, Maia stared at me.

“You okay? You’ve been quiet,”

“Yeah, just thinking about something.” I answered her and she laughed, her laughter like the sweetest tinkling of bells.

Goddess, Alaia had made a masterpiece when she made Maia. Her tourmaline eyes stared so deep into your soul it made you shiver and everything about her was perfect. But I knew we weren’t perfect because we all had our flaws. But our flaws made us less perfect. Because we were still supposed to believe the lie that we were perfect.

“Did you know you can actually use the Pellan petals to make a vial for a glamour?” I asked her and she looked up at me, her eyes full of wonder and curiosity.

“Glamours? As in the disguising of our figure to head into the mortal world?” By the stars, Maia was obsessed with the mortal world.

I was too, but for different reasons. They were innovating and creating things we never would’ve thought about. They made us look like idiots. So, if I had the chance to go… I’d take notes on their advancements. Maia, on the other hand, just wanted to explore the mortal world. Her heart was so big, she wanted to help everyone.

Once we got to the conservatory, the marble stairs looked recently polished and she ran up the stairs. I found myself running to catch up with her. Sometimes, being with her was like you were riding a shooting star. Believe me, it wasn’t as fun as it sounded. You got dizzy and everything moved so fast for you to understand anything. With her, it was in a good way though. The glass domed ceiling casted a halo around her making her glow more and it surprised me. We’d been here plenty of times especially in the night and I never remembered seeing the halo. Her skin was shining even more than mine and I cleared my throat.

“Maia, you’re glowing.”

“Well, the Cheltian blossoms need a lot of moonlight to bloom so that’s why,” she said to me softly and we kept walking until we reached the balcony. I closed her eyes and she smiled.

“Magelion, what are you hiding?”

“I said I had something to show you. It’s a surprise,” I told her as she leaned onto me and I wanted to stay there forever. We walked into the balcony at the sight I had prepared for her. After wrangling a couple of shooting stars and puking all of my breakfast, I finally got enough stardust to sprinkle around the balcony. Doing so would allow us to float and to possibly reach for the stars above the sky.
