"You should have let me help you back at the island."

They had just gotten to Kya's living quarters after apprehending Zaheer. Lin helped her girlfriend get more comfortable pajamas on and tucked her into bed, sliding in with her to get some sleep after an exhausting day. The Waterbender tried to get her to simply go back home but it was no use. Lin was practically attached to her by the hip, pulling her closer and kissing her forehead. Trying to be careful not to hurt her any more than she already was.

"Are you feeling okay? Should I grab a healer?"

"Lin, I'm fine." Kya tried to assure her for the hundredth time that night. "I didn't let you help me because people would have been suspicious."

Lin was the one who wanted to keep their relationship under wraps. At Least for a little while, she was the police chief after all. Toph Beifong's daughter, Earth Kingdom's non-progressive heritage and all. It wasn't meant to go on for quite this long.

"I don't want us to be a secret if it means I can't be there to protect you."

"Oh yeah? And who's going to protect you?" Kya sputtered. "Su told me what you did. You're lucky she was there to save your sorry ass."

"It was pretty stupid..."

At the moment it seemed like a good plan. But when she explained to an angry Kya, alone with her in an empty room on the airship back home, she realized just how bad she sounded. Parading around trying to lure out a Bender with such rare talents- it wasn't her best move, it worked out though, in the end they won. She wasn't planning on telling Kya, but it wasn't like she could just casually mention to Su that she couldn't say anything. The matriarch would have known something was up.

"To go after a lady who can make things explode with her mind? Yeah. It was."

The healer weakly crawled forward and further into Lin's embrace. She was so tired, and it was very apparent that neither of them were in the right state of mind to have a coherent conversation. Instead, Lin's hands found their way to Kya's long hair that had been taken out of its usual high ponytail and relaxed on her backside. Kya's hands wrapped under the Earthbender's back; a reminder that she was still there in the first place.

"I'm sorry." Lin murmered.

"You don't always have to be the hero."

It was true, Kya would love her no matter what. That simple fact continued to astonish her every day.

"I know."

"Are you okay?" Kya asked, trying to fight the tiredness slowly creeping over her.

Besides, if she didn't ask, Lin wouldn't say anything. Whether she was hurt or not. That's just how the Earthbender was.

"I'm okay. Today was a little scary, that's all."

"You can say that again." Kya murmured with a slight huff. "It's okay, we're both safe now. Everything's going to be okay."

"I love you." She heard the Earthbender say in barely audible and raspy whisper.

"I love you too. Try and get some sleep."

The Earthbender shifted slightly, rolling over to her side and taking Kya along with her. She let out a soft giggle when Lin moved the hair out of her face and snuggled up against the crook of her neck. Trying to avoid sleep was inevitable. She could have blamed it on the taxing hours beforehand, but she knew the real cause. Lin was there; holding her, breathing, alive and well. In a whole world of bad people and bad things she managed to get one of the very few good people.

So when she slowly became more drowsy, she held the Earthbender tight because she wasn't willing to give that up, now or ever.
