Chapter 30: Finding James

Y/N's POV

Me, Clem, and AJ are walking through the forest looking for James. We then found a small campsite that was invaded by a small herd of walkers. We then heard someone clear their throat and we turn around.

Y/N: James?

We saw a bandage on his arm.

Clementine: Your arm is hurt.

Y/N: Did the raiders do this to you?

James: It looked like they had people from your school. Why are you guys here?

Y/N: We're going to save them. But we need your help taking the walkers over there.

James: I could maybe help, but my mask is still in the camp. Inside my bag. I can't pass through a herd without it.

Y/N: Let's go get it then.

James: I just ask that you don't kill the walkers. I can get my mask if you guys just distract them.

Clementine: We can try.

James: That's all I ask from you guys.

We then distract the walkers. With the three of us, we were able to kill no walkers as James got his mask.

James: You guys okay?

Y/N: Yeah, we're fine.

Clementine: Now, we need those walkers. We need them to help our friends. Please help us.

James: Follow me.

We follow him. He takes us to a barn.

AJ: What's this thing?

We see AJ looking at something me and Clem hasn't seen in years.

Y/N: That's a salt lick.

Clementine: But don't lick it, it's gross.

Y/N: Yep.

AJ: Did you guys lick it?

Clementine & Y/N: I don't know.

James: So you guys want to use these walkers to sneak in?

Y/N: Yeah, or we'll be gunned down.

James: I want you guys to see something. I want you guys to understand.

He opened the barn door. There are lots of walkers in there. He then closes it.

James: My former people had a practice. Called...collecting. They used them as weapons. I put them in here to protect them. I want you guys to see them how I see them. As people. 

Y/N: I don't know about that.

James: Okay, maybe not people. But in between, There is still a part of us in there. Deep down.

Clementine: I wish that was true. But it's not.

James: They are just lost.

AJ: Do you really think that there's still someone inside of monsters?

James: Yes. Somewhere there is. Has someone you cared about turned?

AJ: Clem and Y/N had a friend named Lee. But he didn't turn because they shot him.

Y/N: My father turned... I never got to kill him before it happened.

James: Do you think... That there is a part of him still inside of him? 

Clem and AJ looked at me. Clem looked at me with a worried look.

Y/N: I wish. But no. He would just be another walker just roaming.

James: I lived among the walkers for as long as I can remember. They are harmless and innocent when they are alone. If you guys want my help. You'll need to walk with them.

He holds out his walker mask.

James: We'll then see if think of them as monsters.

AJ: They are monsters. They're not people or friends.

I take the mask.

Y/N: I'll do it.

Clementine: Are you sure?

Y/N: Yes, I'm sure. I'll be fine.

I take off my hat and give to Clem. I look at AJ.

Y/N: If it gets bad in there, I'll need you and Clem to save me. Okay.

AJ: Y/N.....

Clementine: Don't worry AJ. We'll help him if something happens.

I put on the mask.

James: Be gentle and quiet. Touch the wind chimes, you'll see. 

He opens the door as I walk in. I walk through the walkers and touch the wind chimes. I then see the walkers look up and walk towards it. I then walk out the barn and take off the mask. Clem and AJ run up and hug me. 

Y/N: Whoa, easy.

I hug back.

Clementine: We'll just glad you're alright.

I give the mask back to James.

James: Well? What do you think of them?

Y/N: They're still monsters to me. Sorry James.

James: I understand. I used to think the same thing before.

AJ: Have you ever killed a walker?

James: Many times.

AJ: A person?

James: Many, but that was a long time ago.

AJ: I've killed someone, too.

James: You've killed?

AJ: Yeah. But I'm trying to atone.

James: That's good... I guess.

Clementine: Are you gonna help us save our friends now?

James: No. Too many walkers will die.

Y/N: Those walkers are more important then people who are ALIVE?

James: I....

Clementine: They are alone and scared. They need help.

James: Alright. I'll guide them to the shore, it'll take time, but it'll get done. They'll be ready by tomorrow night. I cannot undo this. 

Y/N: Thanks.

Me, Clem, and AJ then start heading back to the school.
