The Princess and The Knight

Scarlett calmed Bella down and made sure she was okay. Ada offered to take the kids home and Scarlett let her. She waited until Tommy was out of surgery. They brought him back in his room and talked to Scarlett.
"We stopped the brain bleed with no complications. Your husband has gone through significant head trauma though. He's had not one, but two surgeries. We don't know when or even if he'll wake up this time. His odds are 90/10 not in his favor."
She nodded and then they walked out. Scarlett stood beside the bed and ran her hand down his face.
"Damn you and your long eyelashes." She smiled.
She sat down in the chair and held his hand.
"You've fought for so long." She started.
A few tears fell down her cheeks.
"If you can't—"
She got choked up badly. Scarlett looked up at him.
"It's okay if you can't fight anymore. I know your body is tired. I know you're tired."
She looked down and a tear fell on his hand.
"I have to go home for our kids, but I will be back tomorrow. I love you...more than anything."
She stood up and kissed his forehead and then left. Scarlett got in her car and started to drive back. It was about midnight and the roads were dark and empty. She was trying her best to keep it together, but the tears would not let up.
"Stop it, Scarlett. Stop crying."
She couldn't stop it.
"Please just stop." She screamed.
Without even realizing it...the car ran off the road. The car was about to hit a tree, but Scarlett snapped out of it and swerved just in time. The car was in the middle of the road as she put it in park. She stared at the steering wheel and let go of it as her hands shook. Tears streamed down her face as she closed her eyes. She balled up her fists and started to hit the steering wheel as she yelled.
"When does it end?" She screamed.
"Why him?"
She stopped and rested her head on the steering wheel. Scarlett finally broke down. She had never cried like that before. Scarlett was hysterical. Everything she has been pushing down to stay strong for everyone else, all came out at once and she was drowning in it. She gripped the steering wheel.
          "Please don't leave me, Tommy." She sobbed.
          "I'm not as strong as you...I can't...I can't live without you."
She cried for a little bit longer and then composed herself enough to make it home. She checked on Myles first and then went to Bella's room. Bella woke up as Scarlett ran her hand over her face. She grabbed Scarlett's hand and looked at her.
           "Will daddy be okay?"
           "Is he not living anymore like Finny?" She asked.
Scarlett closed her eyes for a second because she could feel the tears coming, but she knew she had to stop. She looked at Bella.
           "He's been fighting so hard for you and your brother." She smiled.
           "I'm going first thing tomorrow morning to see him." She added.
Bella nodded.
           "Will you stay until I fall asleep?"
Scarlett smiled and then took her shoes off and got in bed. Bella turned over and looked Scarlett in the eyes. She gripped Tommy's pillow. Scarlett gave it to Bella to sleep with because it smelled like him. It really helped her with her nightmares. She was attached to it now.
           "Will you tell me a story?"
           "About what?"
           "You and daddy."
Scarlett opened her arms and Bella cuddled up to her.
           "One time I was taken by very bad people. No one could find me. It's like your book where the princess gets taken out of the castle."
She rubbed Bella's arm as she talked.
           "I just hoped and cried out for daddy to come save me. I knew he would be the only one that could. Daddy is like the strong, brave knight in that story. I was so scared and I only wanted him."
           "You were scared, mommy?"
           "I was, but I knew my brave knight would come and rescue me....and he did. He found me and busted through the doors. He may have even punched a guy to get to me."
Bella laughed and Scarlett gave a small smile.
           "He picked me up and carried back to our castle where we were safe and happy. Your daddy saved me. He's saved me more times than I can count. He's so strong and fearless. Nothing will stand in the way of him and his family. We love each other so much and we love you and your brother."
Bella smiled as she closed her eyes.
           "Keep talking mommy."
Scarlett smiled as she continued to talk about Tommy. Bella eventually fell asleep. Scarlett kissed her forehead and carefully got out of bed. Before she went to her room, she opened Finn's door and looked in. Scarlett walked over and sat on the side of his bed. She smiled when she saw that he had a picture of him and Bella framed and then a picture of him, Tommy, Scarlett, and Bella framed.
           "I miss you, Finn. We all do." She said as a tear fell down her cheek.
           "You would not be happy if you could see the family right now."
She took a deep breath.
           "I'm struggling, Finn. I've kept it together for so long and I don't know if I can anymore. I don't know how to do all of this anymore." She cried.
She sat there for a few minutes. Scarlett cleared her throat and stopped crying as she stood up. She walked into her room and shut the door. Whenever Scarlett wasn't home, Ash always laid on her pillow because it smelled like her. He quickly jumped off the bed and ran over to her. She sat in the floor as she petted him.
           "Hey Bubba." She smiled.
He licked her face a few times and then laid across her lap. They made eye contact and she rubbed his head.
          "You still think you're a puppy, don't you?"
Ash was a fully grown German Shepherd, so he was not small at all, but he thought he was a lap dog. She got up and he ran and jumped on the bed and barked at her.
           "I'll be there in one minute. Typical man. Only concern is getting a girl in bed." She joked.
Scarlett changed for bed. She looked at herself in the mirror as she wore Tommy's white long sleeve. She walked out and stopped as she looked at their bed. Scarlett sighed and then got on the couch, which is where she has been sleeping since it happened. She just got covered up, when Ash jumped up. He stood over her as she laid on her back.
           "Don't you think you're a little too big for this?"
He gave her puppy dog eyes and then laid on top of her. He nuzzled his head in her neck and she finally fell asleep for once. A few hours later, the phone in their room rang. Ash jumped up and Scarlett got up and answered it. It was about 3am. It was the hospital calling. Scarlett's hand shook as she listened to what they had to say. She dropped the phone as a tear ran down her cheek.
