Getting out of my bed, I put on my boots and my hoodie, then head outside, remembering my bag and axe this time. Who knows when the raiders will show up.
I expected it to be a week ago, but still no sign of them. No scouts, no nothing. It should make me feel safer, but it just has me more worried.Looking around the courtyard, you'd think this place was a damn fortress. I guess thats what we were aiming for. The barbed wire definetly gave this place a prison yard look.
I last left off where Marlon and the rest were buried. Rosie laid beside Marlon's grave, as if she was expecting him to come back. Hoping, maybe.
"Hey girl, you alright?" I kneel down.
She whimpers, not raising her head.
"C'mere." I pat the side of my leg, beckoning the dog over.
She stands up and walks over, sitting infront of me.
"Good girl, Rosie." I say petting her. "You must really miss him, huh?"
She whimpers again, like she understood what I was saying.
"Its alright girl, we'll take care of you."
She starts to pant and shakes her tail. I stand back up, smiling.
Rosie stands up as well, and walks away into the courtyard. She's a loyal dog. To this place, and to Marlon.
I should hurry up and finish the wall. Get it over with.
The barbed wire and the ladder was still sitting there from last time. I pick up the ladder and lean it against the wall. Seemed steady enough. I pick up the barbed wire with my right hand and climb up with my left. Reaching the top, I rest the wire on the wall and uncoil it.
It took some time to lay it all down, but I got there eventually. Only a small part to do. This one will be tricky though, since some of the wall is missing. Wait... this is how I got in. Huh. I forgot about that. If I was able to get in this way, then a raider definetly would've been able to as well.
"Hey (Y/n)." Clementine calls from below.
I'm pulled out of my thoughts and look down.
"Oh, hey, whats up?"
"Just checking in on everyone, seeing how they're getting on with their jobs. You almost done?" She asks.
"Just this small bit to do, then those raiders have no choice but to go through the gate." I say. "Hows AJ doing?"
"He's better now, thanks for asking. He gets a little bit of pain from his wound every now and then, but his fever is gone." She answers.
"He's a tough kid." I nod. "How are things between you and the others?"
"They seem to be fine with me staying, for now. I'm not sure what they'll do once the raiders are dealt with." She says.
"They'll realize how much much they need you, once you get rid of the raiders."
"If. If I get rid of the raiders. And its not just me, its the whole school. We're all gonna be fighting."
"Hopefully all of us will be enough. This place is home for me now. I'd like it to stay that way."
"I know what you mean" She says. "Well, I wont distract you any further. Talk to you later, (Y/n)."
She walks away, lightly kicking the ladder, making the whole thing wobble. I steady it against the wall.
"Not funny." I call out.
She laughs as she turns around the corner.
I roll out the rest of the barbed wire, sticking it in place.
