I drag each body behind the admin building, piling them up on top of each other to burn
I walk over to the greenhouse, open the gate and step inside. There was Ms Martin's grave, dug beside the place. A wreath of flowers was placed upon the dirt. Ruby must've made it before we left for the boat.

I go inside the greenhouse, and sitting beside a table was the propane on the floor. On the table beside it sat the igniter.
I grab the two things and make my way back to the corpse pile. The grass around it was stained in red, the blood spilling from the bodies.
It took me a while to find out how to actually use the propane, but I eventually figured it out. Once the bodies were ready, I whip out my lighter and lit them up, watching them burn. I take a few steps back from the sudden heat, but watch as the fire grew bigger and bigger.
It would be nice if we all sat around it together, watching the night sky. But something tells me the fact that its a bunch of bodies wouldn't make it so enjoyable. Maybe we'll make a normal bonfire one day.

My face starts to sweat under the mask, so I take it off to get some air. Looking at the mask in my hand, then up at the fire, I'm reminded of the first day I found the school. That morning, I tried to get rid of it. Something stopped me. A part of me is glad I didnt burn it. Putting it on made me able to accept what I did and who I was, and without that, I dont know if I would've been able to help the school in the ways I did. Violet deserves credit too. I would be a conflicted mess without her.

A thought dashes through my mind as I look at the fire and the mask.

"Throw it in. Get rid of it."

But even though that thought popped up, I knew I couldn't. Call it attachment or obsession, but not having it with me makes me feel... incomplete, I guess. Its a part of my past.
Everything Joey had taught me and did for me. Meeting Violet for the first time. The night we spent looking at the stars. The night I confessed and we kissed.
The mask is a reminder. Of my past, and those I care about. And what I'll do to protect them.
I hold it by its strap, and turn away from the fire.

Back in the courtyard, I gather all of the weapons the raiders had brought, laying them out on a bench.

Five crossbows, two rifles, and one pistol.

The raiders had brung a lot of crossbow bolts with them, but not much ammunition when it came to the firearms. The pistol only had one bullet left, along with another magazine hidden in Bill's jacket pocket. The rifles had whatever was already loaded into them and one small crate of extra ammo.

I was clueless when it came to guns. I only knew some of the basics from the few books Dad kept around the house. He never owned one, but he always went to firing ranges during his spare time.
Most of my knowledge came from Joey. He showed me how they worked. Loading, safety, but not how to clean or look after them. Probably because we never took the guns we found. The only times we used them is when we took them from others during a fight. After that, we tossed them aside.

As Joey said, "A knife doesn't jam when you need it most, and doesnt run out of ammo in the middle of a fight".
Susie usually followed that statement up with something along the lines of "plus, its not as fun".

The noise of turning wheels and horse hooves could be heard in the distance and I turn my head to see the others inside the cage with Ruby driving. I step out and give her a small wave. She nods lightly, a frown upon her face, her eyes red. As she moves the horse further into the courtyard, I see the others in the back, their faces sharing the same expression as Ruby's. Louis must have told them.

I follow behind the carriage as it makes a loop around the flagpole. It stops and Ruby hops down. She doesnt say anything or even look at me. She just walks over to the steps and hides her head into her hands.
I open the gate of the cage and they all slowly climb out, not even giving me a glance. When Louis comes out he just gives me a small shake of his head and goes to sit down. Aasim helps Omar down and when he had him sat beside Willy at a bench, he makes his way over to Ruby, patting her on the back.
