Life's been hard without John B driving Twinkie around and Sarah being the light to almost everything. Emelina found herself alone during these dark times, but she preferred it that way.

Another person she loved was stripped from her arms, and she was starting to believe she was cursed.

The police got her statements a few days ago and she hadn't heard anything since. They needed to process everything before they give her a call, and it made her nervous.

Emelina took off her waitress apron for the day and prepared to clock out. Mentally, she wasn't in the right mind space to be taking orders from customers—and Kiara's parents urged her not to, but she had to. It was her only distraction to feeling the pain of her losses. The more she wrote down orders, the less she thought about her dead friends.

Stepping outdoors, she got ahold of her keys and walked down the porch and onto the pavement where her car awaited. A voice called out her name, and she whipped it around to see Kiara.

"Does our friendship mean anything to you?" Kiara started the conversation off without a usual smile to greet her with, and instead with a harsh tone.

Emelina was taken aback by this question and didn't understand the meaning behind it. "What?"

"Or was it all just lies and secrets?" Kiara continued, her eyebrows furrowed in hurt. Emelina squinted her eyes, "Kie, what are you talking about?"

"When were you planning on telling me about you and JJ?"

Emelina felt her body run cold and her heart was thumping against her chest. It was about time Kiara figured out the decoded messages that were exchanged between the Pogues, but Emelina didn't want her to find out on her own. She wanted to tell her first, except she took too long.

Instead of egging on Kiara's words, she simply answered. "There's nothing to tell."

"Really? That's funny because Pope was telling me a different story." Kiara raised an eyebrow. Emelina exhaled a sigh, of course, Pope told her. She pictured Kiara beating it out of him until he cracked.

"I had to hear it from Pope, not my best friend. At least I thought we were." Kiara crossed her arms as a frown formed on her lips.

Emelina shook her head and widened her eyes, offended at her choice of words. "What? You are my best friend."

"Best friends don't keep secrets," Kiara said and let her hands fall to her sides, "That was one of our rules. I let you in on the Pogue life and you've already broken two rules."

"Are you going to pretend you didn't break one too? I literally witnessed you kissing Pope!" Emelina retorted, throwing her hands up.

"Come on, E. You know that's different. I didn't hide it from you!"
