"ROSA! Rosa, wake up, please," Gina sobbed over Rosa's motionless body. Rain had started to pour down on the two girls, one laying still in the road, one kneeling over her, their car upturned off the side of the road. It was winter, and already dark... nobody else was around.
Gina shivered and limped towards rosa's bag; it was a few metres but it was agony. Whatever minor injury that was didn't hold a candle to the fear she felt for Rosa. She dialled 999 as quickly as she could with her shaking hands.
"Hello, do you need ambulance, police or-"
"Ambulance, ambulance please quickly."
"Okay, try to stay calm. Can you tell me what has happened?"
"There's been a car crash. I was driving with, um, Rosa Diaz. She's a detective at the 99th precinct and we're about 40 minutes north from there."
"Can you describe both your injuries please? Is anybody still in the car?"
"Rosa is unconscious. My leg is killing me but i don't care. And no, she's laying a couple of metres away from the car."
"Right i'm sending an ambulance out now, i need you to go to the car and do what i tell you to do. And please don't move Rosa."
Gina walked over to the car as quickly as she could. "What's wrong with the car?"
"I need you to bend down and look under it. Is there any liquid underneath the car?"
"Uh.... yes. Oil on the floor. And the engine is smoking."
"Okay. Tell me your name."
"Gina Linetti."
"Gina, there is a chance that your car-"
"It's rosas."
"That rosa's car is going to catch fire. Tell me exactly how far Rosa is from the car."
"Um... about four yards away."
"Okay. You're going to be fine, an ambulance is on it's way. I'm going to get you to stay on the line. If sparks start coming out of the engine, I need you to tell me straight away, okay? Can you do that?"
"Yes."
"Great! You're doing so well. Right, can you go to Rosa and put two fingers under her jaw..."
The next 15 minutes were a blur for Gina. She did what the paramedic told her to do, just to keep herself busy, but she had no memories of the tasks later. After what seemed like forever, an ambulance arrived and, filled with relief that neither she nor Rosa had been consumed by a car fire, she finally realised how much pain she was in and fell to the floor, panting.
The paramedics got her slowly into a wheelchair and she stared, tears in her eyes, as they put a neck brace on Rosa and pulled her onto a stretcher. The journey to the hospital was a mystery to Gina, who, having a huge fear of blood, fainted as soon as she noticed the blood pouring from her leg that she'd been too adrenaline fuelled to see before. The panic set in again when she woke up to hear Rosa's strained voice- "I cant- I cant breathe, it's my chest, I-" from the bed next to her, just blocked from view by the millions of doctors and the deafening beeping machines, turning her most important person's life into nothing more than an irritating, endless noise.
