The Bet

Y/N's point of view
"Oh come on, Ginny! Don't be a sissy. You're the only one I know who can help pull this off." "I'm sorry. I swear I won't tell him, but he's my brother. I can't do that to him." I groaned. Lavender and I placed a bet— if I could win over Fred Weasley and make him hate me in 2 weeks then she would give me 10 Galleons. I had to win so that I had spending money for the upcoming Hogsmeade trip. I lost all of my savings betting on the Ravenclaws at the most recent Quidditch match

Maybe the key to Fred Weasleys heart is kindness. Yes, that sounds cheesy, but maybe I've taken my sarcasm a little too far. I mean, he's not a bad guy, it's just my sense of humor that very few people understand. I understood that from the start, I just didn't comprehend that I should turn it down a little.

I was lost in thought all throughout today's lessons. I was planning out my next encounter with Fred. I would sit next to him at lunch, apologize, then we could become friends. After that, I charm him, and we start going out. Then, I go back to my usual annoying self, and get him to break up with me. Then, the 10 Galleons is all mine.

"Hey Fred!" I shouted over all of the noise in the Great Hall. "What is it that you need, Y/N?" "Look, I just wanted to say sorry. I've been a jerk to you lately and I didn't really mean it. I'm also sorry for saying that you were going to urinate all over me in front of your friends and family." He looked taken aback. "Oh- um- thanks? I guess?" I nodded in response. "So, friends?" I put my hand out, signaling that a handshake is necessary. "Sure. Friends." We shook hands solemnly and sat down for lunch.

"So, since we're friends now, let's get to know eachother. I'll go first. I'm a a muggleborn, I have two brothers and sister, and my mum is a doctor while my dad is a lawyer." He gave me a confused look, and that's when I realized. "Sorry! I forgot you weren't raised with Muggles. My mum helps take care of people when they're sick or injured, and my dad works with legal stuff." I slapped my forehead worth the palm of my hand. "Okay, well, tell me about yourself." "Uh, I have two brothers, one of which is my twin, George, and the other one is Ron. I also have a sister, Ginny. I really like jokes and pranks, so if you ever pass out after eating something, I probably put some kind of sleeping potion in your food." I widened my eyes at him, having second thoughts about this friendship. "Y/N, I'm joking. But I do love a good prank." I sighed in relief, thanking Merlin that he wasn't going to poison me at this very moment. "Good to know," was all I could say in response.

I think I am doing a wonderful job at this whole befriending-Fred thing. He's easier to talk to than I thought. After lunch, we walked to Defense Against The Dark Arts together, chatting about ourselves. I learned about his deep desire to open a joke shop, and I told him a little bit about my life before Hogwarts. I couldn't help but wonder if I should continue with the bet, because he was a genuinely good person. But I quickly pushed those thoughts out of my head and replaced them with new ones. 10 Galleons. 10 whole Galleons. I could not believe Lavender placed this bet. This was going to be so easy.

After our lessons, Fred promised to introduce me to his family. I was a little nervous, but they all seemed nice on the first day I met him, so I was going to be fine. He said to meet him outside fo the Great Hall precisely 5 minutes before supper. I had a few minutes of free time, so I sprinted up to my dormitory to freshen up. I combed my hair and brushed my teeth, and even applied a little makeup. My sister convinced me to take some to Hogwarts. "You never know, Y/N. You could meet a very hot guy while you have about 6 gigantic zits." That phrase stuck with me. Though I was free of acne, I still decided it wasn't a bad idea to put just a little makeup on.

I checked my watch, 5 'til. He should be here by now. Where is he? Oh, I hope he isn't leading me on, even though that's exactly what I am doing to him. I wouldn't win the bet if he didn't want to go out with me. Suddenly, I heard footsteps behind me. "Sorry.." He stopped to take a breath. "I had to run here from the Astronomy tower. Class went long." "Oh don't worry about it, Fred. I only just got here." He nodded, and took my hand. Butterflies fluttered throughout my body.

Oh no.

Oh no.

I could not be actually falling for him. Maybe it's just because I haven't held hands with someone in over three years. Yes, that had to be it. I was not falling for Fred Weasley.

"Well, this is my family, Y/N. That right there is Ginny, the short one is Ron, and the ugly twin right there is George." "It's nice to meet you. All of you." Ginny gave me a sweet smile. This wasn't going to be too bad.
