ever since she had been released from her daggered prison, kari mikaelson had refused to give her two traitorous brothers the time of day unless their family's lives were in danger. which, unfortunately, had happened quite often back in mystic falls, which led to the original family leaving the dreadful town to itself. they had come to an agreement with the annoying elena gilbert and her equally as annoying crew — aside from caroline, matt, and bonnie, with kari insisting that they were at least tolerable — that the hybrid would come every couple of years for elena's blood for his hybrids. that way, the doppelgänger didn't die, and the original family got to leave without worrying the group would continuously try to kill them.
now, since moving up to new york to get away from the motley crew, and after making a whole other deal with marcel in new orleans, the mikaelsons were trying to relax and live amongst humans while still being themselves. finn had taken up getting used to the latest century along with his youngest three siblings, while elijah and niklaus avoided making kol angry by upsetting kari with their presence.
rebekah used shopping as one of her escapes from the family, sometimes dragging her older sisters with her. after having dealt with their aunt dahlia and freeing freya from her, the eldest mikaelson was glad to spend as much time as she could with her younger sisters. kol spent his time "speed-dating" the humans, where it was mostly him taking advantage of them and either draining them dry, or sending them off on their own after he had his fun.
kari herself was just trying to relax. not once in her thousand years had she had the opportunity to relax like she did now, no longer constantly worrying about her father hunting them down and killing nik. she didn't have to worry that her mother would somehow rise from the grave and kill them all, anymore. she had gained a new big sister, despite how it would take some time to truly get comfortable with her around. the middle daughter had taken up a passion of hers from when she, kol, and rebekah were little, which was caring for flowers.
she had sparsely done it throughout her years as a vampire, but she remembered the joy it brought her every time she cared for the earthly beauties. kari assumed that it stemmed from her longing to still be connected to the earth and her missing her magic, but she pushed those thoughts aside and just enjoyed tending to the delicate beauties.
"hey, ri?"
snapping out of her thoughts, the woman turns away from the flower pot she'd been watering to see her elder sister giving her a soft smile.
"yeah?"
"it's about time for dinner, you ready?"
letting out a sigh, the younger mikaelson nods and places the watering can down. she washes her hands in the nearby sink before drying them and following after the elder.
ever since freya joined the family, she had insisted on family dinners at least twice a week. either they would go out to some high end place, one of them would recommend a food joint, or they'd just sit at home and eat either takeout or something the two older girls and finn had made.
another thing finn had decided to take up with all the time on their hands, was cooking. he was steadily growing better at it, and seeing as he enjoyed it, he tested out new recipes somewhat often. despite them being vampires, and some of them still holding resentment against the eldest son for originally siding with their mother, none of them could deny the fact that his cooking skills were quite good.
he had kari to help teach him, anyways, and she had been cooking for centuries.
apparently tonight was another night of one of finn's newest recipes. he was quite proud of it from the light smile on his face, and he pulled freya's chair out for her before she sat down. seeing his elder brother do so, and wanting to one-up him, kol blurred around the table and did similar actions for his slightly older sister.
