"Layla, what's wrong?"
Matt's question was barely heard over the dull pounding in my ears. Words could not describe the anger I was feeling as my eyes met Hunter's.
Not breaking eye contact, I whispered, "Un-fucking-believable."
Matt stopped eating, glancing between us. "Sorry, do you guys know each other?"
Hunter chuckled. "Oh, I know that Angel very well. In fact, one could say, we're partners in crime."
"Angel?" Matt was understandably confused.
I let out a bitter laugh.
This was crossing the fucking line. Interrupting the only date I'd ever had? That was a new low, even for Hunter.
I should have known it was too good to be true when he let me go.
"He must be mistaking me for someone else," I answered cooly, turning my attention back to Matt. "I don't waste my time with pretentious pieces of shit."
Poor Matt looked like he was going to pass out. The guy hated conflict.
I turned back to look at Hunter, but there was no longer amusement shining in his eyes. They were burning with fire.
"Well, you sure wasted a lot of time with me in my bed the other night."
Fucking hell. I shot up from my seat, gripping my spoon tightly in my hand. He did not just go there.
The way Hunter said it sounded like we had slept together when he knew full well that nothing had happened.
Matt gawked at me with raised eyebrows, his mouth slightly gaping. "You know what, it seems like you guys have some talking to do. Why don't I head out and leave you to it."
He stood to leave but I grasped his wrist, stopping him. "Matt, nothing's going on. That guy's just spewing bullshit."
Matt looked over at Hunter, studying his expression. He must have seen something threatening in his gaze because his head shook in defeat. "Sorry Layla, I don't wanna get involved in whatever this is."
Without another word, he dropped some bills on the table and walked out, leaving me standing there like an idiot.
My knuckles had turned white from gripping the spoon so tightly, and my blood simmered as I met Hunter's gaze.
His eyes were still blazing furiously, but there was a slight tilt to his lips as if to say that he won.
"Don't look so wounded, Angel. I honestly did you a favor," he murmured. "You could do so much better than Matt."
I couldn't even find the words to describe my rage. I simply stood there in furious silence, trying to come to terms with what Hunter had done.
"What's the matter," he taunted, "Cat got your tongue?"
Finally finding the ability to speak, I decided to make it short and sweet.
"What the actual fuck is wrong with you?"
We were definitely gaining attention around the restaurant, and conversation slowly halted as the crowd began to pick up on whatever was going on between Hunter and me.
So much for a low profile.
"Do you need psychological help?" I wasn't stopping. "I mean, that is literally the only explanation for why you thought it was okay to hijack my date."
Hunter's grin only spread, and he cocked his head to the side slowly. "Hijack? Sweetheart, I'm pretty sure I just rescued you from what looked like the driest date to ever exist."
