"Sonya, wake up." Harriet shook her friend awake. "The Doors are opening. Time to go."
Slowly, Sonya got out of her hammock and stretched, glancing at the Glade. It was still partly dark and all the Gladers - with the exception of the Runners, Alby, and Newt - were spread out all over, still asleep. Sonya longed to be able to sleep longer like them.
After doing what little she had to do to get ready, Sonya made her way to the Doors, where Alby, Newt, Minho, Aris, and two Runners she didn't know the names of were standing. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a few other Runners making their way to the Doors, but she couldn't see Harriet or Alex anywhere.
"Harriet's waking Alex up," Aris told her as she approached the group congregated by the Doors, as if reading her thoughts. "They should be here soon."
"So what's the plan?" Newt asked. Sonya sensed that he was half-serious about the question, but he was also trying to dissolve the silence that hung in the air. Minho turned to him.
"What do you mean?"
"Are you all splitting up, or are the Icers going one way together while the Runners do what they always do?"
"The latter," Harriet said, walking up to them with Alex not far behind her. "Once we get into that Maze, we won't be coming back."
"Wow, you really don't bloody like it here, do you?" Newt laughed.
"Not one bit," she replied.
Once the doors fully opened, the Icers and Runners ran inside, each going different ways.

The Glade's Maze was similar to the Spring's, just not icy and cold. In their Maze, the Runners - or Mappers, as they called them - went around in ice skates, which was much easier than running. The walls were the same - tall and made of concrete - with ivy growing everywhere. This was the biggest difference Sonya noticed about the Mazes - the amount of ivy. In the Spring's Maze, there isn't much ivy due to the extreme weather conditions. But here, some parts of the Maze are entirely covered in thick ivy.
As they ran, the Icers didn't talk much, probably because there wasn't much to talk about. Sonya assumed that like her, all of them were in deep conversations with themselves.
"Do you think we'll run into one of those things?" Aris asked suddenly.
"Let's hope not. I do not want to go back there," Alex said.
"Me neither," Sonya agreed. "The last thing I need is a place full of teenage boys trying to hit on me but failing miserably."
"I would rather die before I see that stick Gally's face again," Alex sneered.
"Don't you guys find it a bit odd?" Harriet asked. "You know, all of our similarities?"
"I'm not sure," Aris said. "Personally, I don't think we can trust them."
"Yeah, they didn't really trust us," Alex said, "so how do we know we can trust them?"
"It doesn't matter," Sonya said quickly. "We've made it clear that we're never going back. Even if we had to, we probably wouldn't be welcome. So can we just forget about it and move on please?"
The Icers exchanged looks. Harriet jogged ahead a little so she could be next to Sonya. "Son, what's up?"
"What do you mean?"
"Son, I know you. Something's wrong. Tell me."
"Nothing's wrong, Harriet. I'm fine."
"No, you're not."
"Yes I am!" Sonya sped up ahead of Harriet and the Icers.
They were doing okay until they ran into it.
The Icers had been taking turns leading, and it was now Sonya's turn. It was a stupid mistake, really, but it could've cost her life. She just didn't peek around the corner before she turned.
It was horrible; part machine and part animal. From what she remembered about slugs, Sonya figured that the Griever seemed much like a large mechanical slug. She didn't have enough time to take in every detail about the beast for it charged almost instantly.
It all happened too fast. Seeing it coming at her at an alarming rate, she pushed Harriet - who was coming into the corridor after her - back around the corner and shouted at Alex and Aris to stay there. There just wasn't enough time for Sonya herself to make it back around the corner.
The Griever flung itself at her and tackled her; she tried her best to fight it, but that wasn't an easy task. On her stomach, Sonya felt something sharp enter her body, causing her to cry out in pain. She thought she heard some yells, but she wasn't completely sure.
The last thing she remembered before passing out was a weight being lifted off of her.
