chapter 7 / evolving mankind

Jean shrugged, as she kept her eyes fixed on the closed metal doors, waiting for the exact moment for intruders to barge in.

Instead, a robotic voice came over the intercoms.

"Mankind had its change to rule, Avengers. But this world is long overdue... an upgrade."

"What the hell was that?" asked Scott.

"An intruder!" Jean yelled, as the doors bursted open and a bunch of levitating bots came through.

They were shiny silver, gifted with perfect aim and power, as their precise blasts deflected off their glass container.

On the back of them, sat a huge, printed in bold and fancy lettering, "S,"

"Now's a good time to help! Kitty, phase us through!"

"Uh guys, like- are we sure we wanna do that?" she asked, as the clueless bots kept firing at the glass.

"Just go!" Jean said, as she connected their hands and Scott latched on as well, Kitty closing her eyes as they phased through.

The robots didn't hesitate to approach them, as the same obnoxious voice from earlier came on and said, "I have found a means to evolve machine-kind beyond our programming, making humanity obsolete."

Scott quickly lasered them, as one fell back and bolts of shock surrounded it.

"Guys, I don't know what's going on but let's just go!" said Kitty, as Jean and Scott finally agreed with her for once.

They dashed past the rest of the robots, as they followed and continued to shoot, which was easily avoided due to their many different runs in the danger room.

As they continued to sprint, they ran straight into another room, where iron guy, some other chic, robot man, and axe man were having a brawl with a dozen more robots, just like the ones they fought earlier.

"Looks like Ultron let out or unwelcomed guests as well!" yelled iron guy, punching one of the robots.

"It seems they have tried to keep the peace, considering the types of powers that one has." robot guy added, looking straight at Kitty.

"We're not here to fight you guys, we wanna help." said Jean.

Iron guy disregarded Jean's comment, "Once this is over, you guys will be back in that cell!"

"Alright, yeah yeah, just step aside." said Kitty, as her hair went back into a low ponytail and she balled her fists as they came up on her. The simple solution was to walk through them, her gift of electronic disruption would drop these suckers like flies.

But why not have a little fun with it?

Running through one of them and then taking hold of their now unserviceable arm, ripping it off the limb only to flip around again and whack another one right upside the head, sending it soaring backwards as it then knelt, holding its head as it seemed to be recharging.

"Quick! Nat hack it!"

The redhead ran over to the large computer that had almost gone unnoticed to Kitty, forcefully pressing down on the assortment of keys as she typed, until the red lights turned up into a more peaceful white, the robots afterward dropping for good, as Kitty stepped over the bodies.

"Did that prove our intentions? Or do you need even more?" she sassily asked.

The iron guy was about to reply, but robot man cut him off, "The tower systems have been restored to 25% functionality."

"What's that supposed to mean?" asked Scott.

"Our systems been overridden by a recurring threat that we've killed over and over again but he somehow just keeps coming back I guess?" the iron guy replied, "Hey, you, ghost girl, what's your name?"

"Shadowcat," she replied.

"Real name,"

"Do you know how much danger that puts me in by revealing my real name to a stranger?"

"Just say it!" groaned Jean.

"Kate," she replied, another adaptation of the name Katherine that was overused.

"Petty Ski-Visor man, little red?" he asked, looking over to Jean and Scott, who were frowning.

"Scott,"

"I'm Jean,"

"Alright, well welcome to the Avengers Tower. I'm Iron Man, that's Vision, Natasha Romanoff, and Thor." he introduced, pointing out each person to the three.

"So this threat of yours? Shouldn't we be stopping it instead of exchanging nicknames?" asked Scott.

"Well, let me make this clear first though. You follow my lead, alright?"

"Sure,"

"Come on," he said, leading them out of the room and into a large hall. They took a couple turns, down a hall or two and then to a large circular room, iron bots everywhere.

Thankfully, they were powered down and plugged into the wall.

Whoops.

Spoke too soon.

The robots emerged from their places in the wall and landed roughly as they stomped towards them.

"You three, distraction!" Iron Man shouted.

They nodded, as Scott's visor lit up and began to fire out, and Jean slammed the brainless machines into the walls repeatedly.

Going down through the floor as a beam of light shot out at her, it struck another robot as she phased upward and charged it, gripping onto its cold metal body as they went down together, the android coming to a rough landing, as she came to a more elegant summersalt, letting the disrepaired corpse just lay there as she journeyed on to her next victim.

She took the easy way out as she walked through a couple, giggling at their despair, until the huge sight of the light fixture started to loosen up from the ceiling.

Standing right under it, was Vision, who was working on hacking the computer.

Diving under into the metal paneled floor, she slid right underneath the guy and took a quick grip onto his foot as the chandelier fell.

He flinched a little, until he saw the familiar tan face and head slide out from the flooring, as she phased back up and through.

Moments later, the programming was finished.

The bots expiring as their systems started to malfunction. Little sparks of energy threatening to explode, but instead dying down with the androids.

The lights settled once again, as they kept their pace through the tower.

"Hey Avengers. This is the Wasp. I'd love to join in on the fun but I'm currently locked down in the main living quarters while I was trying to track down another intruder. If you guys can swing by and set me free, that'd be swell." said a voice through Iron Man's comm.

"So which one of you called your backup?" Natasha asked, looking at the three.
