Crashing waves against rocky cliffs, a caress of water against golden sand that went on for a couple of meters before it changed to scarce fauna of little plants which after a while gave way to trees with hardly any leaves was the scenery Loki was faced with the moment the Bifrost let him land and the lights disappeared, leaving him behind. He took a moment to look around. He stuck out in this scenery, his clothes indicating he didn't belong in this place, and if anyone were around to see him, they would look at him in a weird manner for sure. He didn't belong here. Then again, it hadn't been his attempt to belong in this place anyway.
He looked around for a moment longer before his eyes noticed a small path through the fauna, leading deeper in the nature. Fandral, the only person who had been in this place before, had told him once he had returned he should follow the path and he would find the cottage he was looking for with no issue. In any other time, Loki may have been hesitant to follow Fandral's advice. Not this time.
He followed the path, soon enough leaving the beach behind, the sound of the crashing waves hardly heard the deeper he moved. He had thought there would be shade to shield him from the sun the more he walked but he found he had been wrong. Fields stretched around him, olive trees as far as the eye could see. Loki moved on.
He couldn't remember the last time he had set foot in Midgard and if it were up to him, he wouldn't have come back. There was a person he held dear that had decided to call this place their home a couple of weeks back, though. He couldn't wait any longer to visit her. He should have come sooner.
Loki followed the path, thoughts occupied by the goddess who had captured his mind for a while now. He remembered her soft smiles, the deep colour of her eyes, the way her hair framed her face. The determination in her gaze when she fought, the set of her jaw, the furrow of her brow. Her healing touch. Her unforgiving movements when she fought. Eir.
She was all he could think about and he was surprised with himself it had taken him this long to actually visit her. Fandral had taken her up on her offer to visit her in her cottage only a few days after she had left and he had come back twice afterwards, and part of Loki was ashamed he hadn't found the courage to come sooner. Each time Fandral saw her, he told Loki and the rest of their friends something new.
The first time he did, he told them the collage was located in an area close to sea, fields and cliffs and hills, a place that had it all. The second time, he told them how the locals didn't speak their language but Eir liked it better that way so she didn't have to answer any questions or interact with people more than she needed to. The third time, he told them in an excited manner how Eir seemed to be adjusting in this new life and how she liked being there. Every time he came back to them, though, he would drag Loki aside and tell him of the way Eir spoke of him.
She missed him, he could tell by what Fandral had told him. She mentioned him in conversation, pointed out things she claimed he would have liked. Even if Fandral hadn't told him any of that, though, Loki would have still realized by the looks Fandral sent him, little smirks here and there, a raised eyebrow on occasion. He had been pestering him about visiting for a while now. Finally, Loki had found the courage to do so.
The path didn't seem to end any time soon, but against his expectations, it widened and on the side he caught sight of a white fence, almost covered completely by plants twisting around it. He stopped, took a look inside. There was a small garden, two olive trees on either side of the house, sunflowers on one side, some jasmine growing on the walls of the house, stopping just below the window looking in the garden. The house appeared small, but before he could evaluate it, the door opened, and Eir stepped out.
His breath hitched, his eyes widened, jaw fell open slightly. He thought he had forgotten how to breathe.
The clothes she wore were nothing like those she had been wearing when she had been in Asgard. She wore a skirt the colour of dry soil and a white shirt, for once, her cane not in her arms. Her hair she had always kept away from her face in case she ever needed to fight was let loose, falling to her back in gentle waves, moving with the caress of the wind. She looked more peaceful than he had seen her look in months. Before he had realised it, he was calling her name.
Eir's eyes landed on him at once, expression startled for a moment before her lips stretched into a wide smile that went on to reach her eyes. And then she was skipping towards him and he was opening the little door of the fence and they were meeting halfway. She almost threw herself at him, hiding her face in the crook of his neck as he held her close, lips forming a small smile as he heard her sigh.
"It took you long enough," she mumbled, took in a deep breath before she pulled back, her smile stunning as she let him go. "I thought I was destined to live the rest of my life in Fandral's company."
"Don't even joke about that," he chastised and she couldn't help but chuckle.
She looked happier than he had seen her in a long time, and unable to help himself, he leaned down, pressed his lips against her own, swallowed the small sigh that escaped from her mouth at the contact. The kiss was gentle, lazy almost, just a simple press, but it was grounding to both of them, a reminder they were in each other's arms, that they still cared for each other. When they pulled away, Eir's smile was softer as she peered up at him.
"Would you like to come inside?"
"I would love to."
She reached for his hand as she led him to the house, his gaze fell on his mother's ring on her finger. A tiny smile formed on his lips as he regarded her fondly, and almost at once, he started crafting an excuse he could tell to his father good enough for his absence from Asgard. Because now he had gotten the chance to be with Eir again, he doubted he would be going back any time soon.
THE END
And this is the end of Broken Remedy! Thank you so much to all of you who kept on reading the story even after the rather lengthy hiatus of almost a year. I'm so glad I managed to make myself write the last few parts of this so you could have a completed story to read.
Broken Remedy wasn't supposed to have a nice end when I first planned it. The ending Eir and Loki got, though, is a nice one, not all that angsty. Thankfully for all of us, no more deaths occurred (in the original version a lot more people died). I hope this end, even though it's vague, is good enough for all of you.
Thank you for reading this and if you enjoyed it, I'm very glad. I hope I will have the inspiration in the future to write more things for you.
Love, Olga.
