Love.
It means something different to everyone.
To some it is a love for an animal, others to humans; platonic or not. Or to some it may mean more than just the world itself. It could mean a desire to keep someone safe, to treasure them forever, while for others it could be a desire to hold them above everything else. Above life itself.
And to others it may be a selfish desire, manipulative and cruel. Harsh and unforgiving.
Yet still in some complex way of its own, it all finds a way to squeeze itself under one category; leaving each and every one of us to roll our luck on the chance of a dice. Our luck on love, taking the hand of whatever is dealt with us, no matter what the consequences.
It had taken Dream a while to recognise this, yet alone understand it. And in some ways he still didn't understand it now.
Love.
To Demons it is supposed to be seen as such a trivial thing, a fun little game humans like to play, something to contort and torture.
Dream had agreed with that for a long while. I mean, what was the point of devoting your life to something that would only ever give you finite happiness in return. What was the point in rolling your choices on the dice when you would be much better off without it, why would you take a risk that so obviously wasn't worth taking.
But then you see, Dream had rolled that dice -willingly or not -and in return he had gotten more than he had ever hoped for.
He had gotten George.
But then of course the tables had turned and he had lost that love seemingly in an instant, like a whiteboard brushed clear of chalk.
It was almost a taunting game. You see, love, it pulls you in just enough for you to become dependent on it before ripping you apart like predator on prey.
Of course, Dream himself had seen it happen to many humans before him, laughing as sometimes he cut the strings himself, initiating that tiny spark that caused the rubble to fall. He had found it oh so funny then, watching as peoples worlds would crumble around them.
Yet no amount of observation could warrant him to how it truly felt.
He'd always seemed amused at how humans crawled back to each other like desperate little insects, unwilling pawns in a chess game they were doomed to lose.
He always wondered how they could be so unfathomably stupid to fall in love. And then he had gone and done it himself.
In some aspects, it seemed better and worse to simply watch from the side lines.
Better, because it meant you could laugh and joke and hollar over the mistakes as much as you like. Worse, because you would never feel the thrill. You would never know what it is like to have someone's lips pressed against yours or the feeling of them fast asleep against your chest.
Of course it only makes it more painful when you lose it.
He had always thought it wouldn't be worth the loss. You're, what, ready to sacrifice life later on happiness pining over someone you could never have, just so you could cherish a few insignificant moments of bliss?
