Chapter 27

Emily P.O.V

We all stare at the screen, watching silently. Rumlow abruptly flips the note pad and I have to zoom in a little more to figure out what he wrote.

That was text numero uno.

I sigh and place my head in my hands. I inhale deep breaths, trying to calm myself down. Killing six people, seven if you count Peggy because I dragged her into this mess. I look back up and he is grinning wickedly. It’s almost like it’s live.

I spent five days out in the fricken wilderness. I took down a bare mutant with my hands, snapping its neck. I survived on berries and streams. I survived two gun shots and it was all a fricken test, a test to change myself.

I feel a hand on my back and I jump up swiftly, grabbing the arm and twisting it around. I let go when I realize that it was Bucky. He shakes his hand, trying to mask the pain I gave him.

“Are you sure they didn’t inject you with something? You’re super strong.” He says and I shake my head slowly.

“I’m not sure. I woke up, strapped to a metal chair.” I say to him and he looks abruptly. “Not the brainwashing machine, I would know because I made it.” I say and he nods his head. I go back to sitting where I was and with my head in my hands.

“We’ll get them.” Bucky says and I glance at him before looking at my hands.

“We better. I made a promise to Peggy and I intend to keep it.” I say to him and the weight and guilt of her dying weighs down on my shoulders. Bucky rubs a hand on my shoulder.

“”How are you?” He asks me and I take a deep breath.

“I feel like a shell. Almost like a damsel in distress. I bring so much trouble everywhere I go. HYDRA, Loki, who knows what next. Deaths weigh on my shoulder and its painting them red, flashing through my conscious. I see their faces and wonder if they had family. That street row where Peggy lived, got blown up. Bombs implanted into the victim’s skins, which happened to be a whole family.” I say to him.

“I feel like such a burden. I practically kidnapped all of you. I blew up my suits. I sent you all to an S.H.I.E.L.D base and you then end up searching for me because I’m in danger.” I forget that everyone is in the room. “I put you all in harm’s way. I guess we all have red in our ledger, but innocents got caught in a mess that they had no clue about. Peggy…” I pause and tears threaten, but I’m not going to cry is doesn’t fix anything. I harden my face.

“She got involved just because I dropped in her doorstep. Got shot at again in who knows how many years. Jumped around when I ran to the Tower.” I pause. “I just don’t see why HYDRA keeps trying, they already lost two ‘assets’” I state, trying to figure out what we can do.

“Because they need their two weapons.” Bucky states and I sigh.

“Then we can’t let them get the weapons.” It feels weird calling myself a weapon.

“Pick up training, kick up security measures. Guard them at all times and have eyes on them.” Steve says and I jump glancing up at him. I jump, having forgotten he and everyone else was there.

I glance around and some of them look amused, knowing I had forgotten them.

“I think Alice and Jarvis are pretty good security measures. I was painting my suit when they got me. I didn’t call it because I knew they had done something to it and my other suits were at another base and they would attract attention.” I say to them and Steve shrugs.
