Punjab... The moment we hear this name, the first thing that flashes right in front of our eyes is vibrant attires, elated people, and fields — lush and green! Isn't it? But none of us can deny the fact that this small state, located in the northern part of India, is a lot more than that.

Formed with the amalgamation of two words, 'Punj' meaning 'Five' and 'Aab' meaning 'Water', Punjab has rightfully earned the title of the 'Land of Five Rivers'. These five rivers that have been bestowed upon this beautiful state are Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum. Today, only Sutlej, Ravi, and Beas flow through the region of Punjab that falls under the Indian territory. In contrast, Chenab and Jhelum are now a part of Punjab, falling under the territory of Pakistan.

With the beautiful union territory of Jammu & Kashmir lying to its north, the state of Punjab is bordered by the union territory of Chandigarh to the east, states of Himachal Pradesh to the north and northeast, Haryana to the south and southeast, and Rajasthan to the southwest. To the west, it is bordered by Pakistan. Punjab shares its capital of Chandigarh with the neighboring state, Haryana. With 22 districts, the state covers an area of 50,362 sq. km.

Assuming the position of the head of the state, Capt. Amarinder Singh was sworn in as the 26th Chief Minister of Punjab on 16th March 2017. Shri Vijayender Pal Singh Badnore has been presiding over the position of the Governor of Punjab since 17th August 2016.

Punjabi, written in Gurmukhi script, is the official language of the state and is the tenth most popular language of the world. Some of the major dialects of the Punjabi language include Majhi, Shahpuri, Malwai, Doabi, Puadhi, Jatki, and Chenavari.

The first written evidence of the word 'Punjab' is found in the travel account of Ibn Battuta, a medieval Muslim traveler who traveled to the region sometime in the fourteenth century. Ancient Punjab was a part of the Indo-Iranian region, and with time, several dynasties, both Indian and foreign, including Mauryan, Bactrian, Greek, Saka, Kushana, and Gupta, rose to power. However, medieval Punjab mostly witnessed Muslim rulers rising to power which included Ghaznavi, the Ghoris, the rulers of the Slave Dynasty, the Khiljis, the Tughlaks, the Lodhis, and the Mughals.
