The girl's eyes went wide when she saw her home and smiled. She extended her arm to open the gate to enter.
'Finally! I'm home!' she thought as she opened the front door.
"Mom! Rie! Mat! I'm finally home. I miss you guys so much!" she said as she extended her arms to hug them.
"Mari, we also miss you, but you need to pack your things quickly." her mother said as she her eyes searched for the surroundings, obviously wary of something.
"Why Mom? What's wrong?" Mari asked as she tilted her head to the side and scratched it, probably confused.
"Just pack your belongings, because we're going to be late for the flight." the woman answered as she watched Mari run upstairs.
She went to her room to get something. She already has everything she needed in her bag, but she still snatched the thing she's attached to the most and swiftly stuffed it in her bag as she ran downstairs
"Hurry up and let's go. And also, try to keep quiet or else they might hear you." the statement confused the girl even more, but she just followed her mom as they went outside the door.
Upon stepping out, she heard lowly growls outside as she quietly observed. There were strange looking people slowly walking towards their house.
'Is this what I think it is?' Mari thought as she silently grabbed the sharp object that was beside her.
'Oh my precious bolo! You're going to be useful, because these plants aren't going to help us defeat them.'
She then slowly opened their gate to avoid making noises as she silently signalled her family to go and lead. Mari was behind them, so she kept an eye out for danger.
'That's why Mom told me to be quiet. There are zombies?! I never new they existed! I thought they only existed in movies. Are they like what they are in the movies? Do they really infect people? What are the safety measures to avoid them? Why am I somehow excited but also scared, but mostly excited? What in the world?'
Thoughts ran through her head as she kept thinking about the concept, but stopped when they reached the place. She was now standing in front of an airport.
'This is still strange. There are no people around. But what's more strange is that there was no airport in this subdivision to begin with.'
While following her family, someone ran towards her sister. Mari noticed this, so she grabbed the head of the person and pulled it hard. To her surprise, the head came off as it is now in her hand and the body was lying on the ground. She shrieked and quickly threw the head away, but it hit another person.
"Lance?"
The person turned around upon hearing his name. He had a terrified expression when he looked at what was thrown at him and screamed.
"Hey! Don't scream! You might attract others." Mari whisper shouted.
When Lance looked at Mari, his expression calmed down for a moment.
"Mari?"
Mari smiled and went towards him. His calm expression died when he realized something.
"Ahhh!!! Mari's a ghost!!!" he screamed again as he ran away from her.
"Wait, Lance! Where are you going?" Mari whisper shouted again.
'What was he doing? He might attract the attention of other zombies. And what was that he called me? A ghost? What was on his mind to say such a thing? A lot is happening in just one day. I'm starting to think that this all just a dream, but it's not. I feel pain while pinching myself. But maybe it is a dream because there are limited people?'
While she was absorbed in her thoughts, a flight attendant tapped her shoulder and spoke.
"Excuse me miss, but I think you've been spacing out."
"I'm really sorry. I think I should be going now." Mari said as she walked towards her seat, beside her sister.
'That lady was nice. She reminded me while I was spacing out.'
She looked around her surroundings. She was inside an airplane with a lot of people.
'Wait, a lot of people? Where did they all come from?!'
While everything seems to be normal, Mari's suspicions did not fade. People were just minding their own business, so Mari decided to calm down and kept her cool as she adjusted the air conditioning above her. While doing so, the captain spoke that they were going to a safer place. After that, the flight attendants gave the safety instructions.
When they were done, Mari sat in a comfortable position. The cool air blew on top of her, so she started to feel drowsy and decided to go to sleep. Upon closing her eyes, screams were heard at the other section of the plane. Mari jolted and her eyes went wide open.
"What happened?" people exclaimed as they panicked while the flight attendants tried to calm them down.
While this happened, Mari's mother dragged her along with her siblings quietly towards the bathroom and shoved them inside.
"Mari, whatever happens, do not open this door until you arrive to your destination with your siblings, okay?" Her mom said.
"Wait, but-"
"I only have a few moments left before I transform into a zombie, so take care of your siblings."
The woman's face became different. Her face turned pale as her eyes started to lose color. Before she could do anything else, she closed the bathroom door.
From inside, Mari locked the door to avoid letting the zombie in. She couldn't believe what just happened.
'Since when was she bitten? Did I miss something? Why didn't I realize it sooner? Why did she have to hide it from me? Why mom?' Mari thought as she concealed herself and tried not to cry, but her eyes won't let her as tears ran down her cheeks.
When she saw that she was with her siblings, she composed herself and wiped her tears.
"Did you two know anything about this?" Mari whispered to her siblings.
"Mom said not to tell you anything." her younger sister said.
"But Mommy did say that I should not cry when this happens, because I'm a big boy now." her younger brother said.
Mari sat down on the bathroom floor, so the two younger siblings placed their heads on their elder sister's lap. She then caressed their heads as they started to fall asleep. After a while, she closed her eyes and fell asleep.
