I waited for him to take the lead— because clearly, between the two of us, Jungkook was the one with a functioning brain right now.
"Yesterday at lunch, one of my closest friends, Kim Taehyung, asked Ara to have lunch with him alone," he started.
The officer interrupted before he could go on, eyes pinning me like I was under a microscope.
"Are you close with them?" he asked.
Oh great. That tone. That so-are-you-even-worthy-of-their-friendship tone.
As if the boys weren’t just famous born billionaires but literal deities walking among mortals.
“Yes. They’re my friends too,” I answered, fighting the urge to roll my eyes.
The male investigator hummed— that kind of hum that means he’s about to say something offensive wrapped in fake curiosity.
“So, what does your father do? I ran a quick background check. You don’t really come from that… rank.”
Rank? What am I, a knight? Also— how fucking rude. Since when did being born middle-class make friendship a crime?
Before I could open my mouth, Jungkook’s voice sliced through the tension. “I don’t think that’s the way to talk to my girlfriend. If you’ve got nothing relevant, we’re done here.”
Girlfriend. Great. Add that to today’s chaos.
He stood up, his hand wrapping around mine protectively. I could feel the heat in his palm— anger barely contained.
The officer looked like someone just stepped on his ego, coughed awkwardly, and motioned for him to continue. “I’m sorry, Mr. Jeon. Kindly— carry on.”
Jungkook exhaled sharply, eyes locked forward. “I felt insecure seeing Ara and Taehyung walk away together, so I followed. Lost them in the crowd. When I finally found them, I saw Taehyung kissing her. I didn’t stay to see what actually happened. I ran. It was stupid.”
That was it? That was his side of the story? Because from where I stood— I hadn’t even kissed Taehyung back.
“But I pushed him away, I didn’t even—”
“I know. I’m sorry,” he said immediately, and something in his tone made my chest unclench a little.
“What happened with Hana?” Another voice asked, his tone clipped.
“I was angry at Ara, and I lost it—” Jungkook began, but the officer interrupted again.
