I looked over at Chris while he drove. He seemed so carefree and relaxed, it made me want to be the same way. I really hoped this case would be easy and I could stay here afterward. I've only been here for a few hours and all I want to do is stay. Chris makes me want to stay.
That thought jerked me out of my head. I looked back at Chris to find him looking back at me. I smiled at him. 'What do you want?" I joked with him. "Why are you staring?"
"Am I not allowed to stare?" he laughed. "As to what I want, where do you want to go? You never answered me the first time."
"Well, seeing as I am new to town, why don't you pick somewhere?" I smiled. "Show me your favorite place?" I asked.
"You want to see my favorite place?" He smiled.
"Yes, please! I am new here; I just want to know the best place to go." As I was speaking his smile kept getting bigger. I realized his smile is infectious. His smile was making me smile. He reached over and grabbed my hand.
"I will gladly show you my favorite place. But we need to make a stop first." He just smiled in my direction.
"Where are we stopping? And where are we going?" I smiled. It was then that I realized he still had my hand. I didn't want him to let go. As he drove it was mostly small talk. I learned a little bit more about him. Not much time had passed before we were pulling up to some small restaurant.
"Wait here. I will be right back." He smiled at me. I just kind of laughed.
"Hell no, I am your bodyguard. Remember?" I smirked while getting out of the car. "You do not leave my sight." I walked over to him and met him at the door.
"This is definitely going to take some getting used to. Well in we go." He led me inside and walked up to the counter. "Pick up for Chris please?" the waitress left and came back with a basket of food. She passed the food to us and told us it was all set. All I could think of is when did he order food. I glanced over at him with a raised eyebrow. "I ordered it earlier on my phone if that is what you are wondering."
"Well, yes. But also, where to now? Clearly, you have more planned?" I was confused. He said this was stop one, so I was curious as to where stop two was. As we started pulling away from the restaurant my phone rang. I looked at Chris and shared an awkward smile. "Saved by the bell."
I answered my phone and before I could get a word out the director was yelling. "AGENT CARSON HOW DARE YOU SPEAK TO YOUR PARTNER THAT WAY!" The director tried to continue but I cut him off.
"How dare I? How Dare I? How dare he come back and act like nothing has changed? How dare he assume that he would take the lead and force me to report to him? How dare you assign him as my partner even after you knew what happened last time? How dare you not think of my issues with him? How dare you let him assume these things?" I ranted to my boss. I felt bad talking about Nikolas in front of Chris, not really knowing what their friendship was past roommates.
"Agent Carson, it would do you well to remember who you are speaking to." Director Doss firmly stated.
"Director, respectfully, I do not give a rats ass about who I am talking to right now. You fucked up. You made the person who almost got me killed on a mission because they left my partner. You know that I am the best there is right now. Top of my class and top of all the training exercises. Exercises that your son has been missing for the past 2 years. I have led 15 successful missions since he left. He has not led a single mission, let alone been on a mission, in 2 years. You have assigned me a partner I not only do not trust but someone who is severely lacking in the proper skills. Please understand where I am coming from." I vented to the Director. It felt good to finally get these feelings off my chest. It felt like a weight lifted off my chest.
"You are right Agent Carson. I did let someone who has been lacking be your partner. I thought you two would work well together as you did in the past. Clearly, I was wrong. Clearly, I should have talked to you about this before I made a decision. I will make it very clear to my son that the mission is yours and he is required to follow your every command. I will also make it clear that if he wants to stay on this case, he will take the required training courses and exercises. Give it a month and if you still cannot work with Agent Doss then I will assign a new partner." The director stated. "I will send you pertained information into the files on your phone. Have a good night."
"You too director. You too." I sighed and hung up the phone. I turned to face Chris. "I am sorry you had to hear that. He can be a bit much sometimes."
"It's no problem I promise. Now are you ready for our night? We are here but we need to walk a little. You up for it?" He looked towards me questioning. Almost like he was trying to take my mind off everything going on.
"Yeah, I am ready, but only if you tell me where we are going." I smiled and got out of the truck. He walked around to meet me with the food in a basket he pulled from the bed of his truck.
"Why would I tell you that? Especially since I am looking forward to seeing the look on your face when we get there." He smiled and reached for my hand. As we started walking, I noticed we were in a little park outside the city. "This is my favorite place. I found this by accident one year after getting lost. I sat here for hours and noticed how peaceful it was. Ever since then it has been my go-to safe place. I don't really bring people here." My heart started to flutter as I realized I was the first he brought here.
"Well, I appreciate you sharing your special place with me." I smiled. As we reached an area that was far away from the public my breath caught in my throat. The view was amazing. The park was atop a hill and the whole city could be seen. It was absolutely breathtaking. The only thing I could think was "Wow" I heard a soft chuckle from beside me.
"I agree, wow is right. Sometimes I sit out here and ignore the world. I'm glad I can ignore the world with you." He smiled and started setting up a little picnic for us with a blanket and everything.
