IT FELT WRONG TO leave the two of them on their own, but Eurion feared she didn't have a choice. They were there for a reason, and they couldn't let the princess slow them down. Lionel was in just as much danger as his father, so she snuck him away. They'd look for the clue while Selene kept the faery occupied.
"How hard can it be?" she sighed. "An entire city full of heavily guarded banks and museums and mansions and a godforsaken palace. Really narrows down our search, doesn't it?"
The boy shrugged. "What are we looking for exactly?"
She swallowed. She didn't know what they were even trying to find, maybe it wasn't even something a person could guard. It would help if she could remember those pages she burned, but she had a terrible memory when it came to words and numbers and things like that. If it wasn't an experience, it didn't stay in her head.
"Wish I knew, kid," she told him. "Maybe we should find your dad. Did you see what way he went?"
He pointed in front of them, and she followed his finger to find Kit and Morgana coming their way with odd expressions. Eurion couldn't quite place what it was they appeared to be feeling, but judging by the way they refused to get closer than a foot to each other, she could sense tension.
Kit's jaw was clenched, and a lump remained in his throat even when he spoke. "Where's Giselle and Selene? Are they alright?"
"They're distracting the princess, we're trying to find the clue," she said. "It would help if I knew what that clue was."
"That wouldn't be a problem if we still had the only information on the Grail's whereabouts accessible to the average person," Morgana grumbled, and Kit looked like he might've hit him if they weren't surrounded by people. They were right back to hating each other, and Eurion couldn't quite decide which was more unbearable between Kit's constant puppy eyes or his grumpy paranoia. At least the yearning was a change of scenery.
"Honestly, I think we'd have more problems than we already do if Connor got his hands on those pages, but sure, Morgana," she droned. "It's all my fault for being an idiot and getting rid of them, I couldn't possibly have known what I was doing."
"Thank you for owning up to it," the Unseelie replied, and she thumped the heel of her palm against the back of his head. "Ow."
She nodded towards a street as an idea formulated in her mind. "Follow me, " she ordered. "I might figure out a way to help me remember, maybe there's something there that could get me started."
"What about Giselle?" Morgana asked. "We can't just leave them there."
"You're free to join them," Eurion said. "But I'm taking Kit and Lionel, the princess can't know where they are. They're the reason she's here."
He looked torn. His eyes scanned Kit, anger masking the fear, like he didn't know who he wanted to protect more, as if the one he didn't hate wasn't the obvious answer.
The prince looked just as conflicted, but for entirely different reasons.
"I'd rather you go so I don't have to deal with you," he told him. "But I can't imagine you'd be up to any good if someone isn't watching you like a hawk."
"I'll go," Morgana growled. "If only to piss you off."
"Stay," Kit hissed. "I don't suspect you of mischief, I suspect you of using up every last drop of energy you have left until the princess has no problem killing you."
"You confuse me."
"Oh, you're both confusing," said Eurion. "Come on, then, let's go before she smells your bickering."
