The Sky

The three of us ran into cheer practice and there I saw the girls. Chloe was standing in front of them. She was a real beauty. She had brunette hair and beautiful grey eyes. We had been close before. She joined the team with me. But after I got elected as team captain, she made her distance from me. I never thought much about it. Just the 2 of us growing up and meeting new people.

'About time Perrie,' Chloe said coldly. I ignored her comment and started the girls on warm-ups. There was not much time left before zonals and we needed to finish our routine. Our school had a reputation we had to uphold. Year after year, we were state champions. The budget for the cheer squad was the highest in the school. The cheer costume was simple. A blue frilled skirt and white cropped top with the the words 'Sharks' on it. Practice went smoothly and the progress for the routine was good. When I checked my watch, which belonged to my mother, my eyes grew big. I had to be back at detention immediately! It was going to end soon and I needed to be there for the last 10 minutes. I grabbed my bag and ran out of the auditorium screaming "Same time tomorrow!' at the girls. Chelsea and Beth dashed behind me and we burst into the detention room.

'Calm down girls! You're not late!' Niall smiled. And so we sat down and waited for the detention teacher to come and scream at us again. And that's exactly what he did.

Only another 9 days of this.

'Thanks for covering for me babe.' I said to Zayn as I planted a kiss on his cheek. 'Sorry for putting you through all this trouble. First you had to go all the way to Gold Coast just to see me. And then you got into 2 weeks of detention for it. And on top of that you're gonna have to cover for me for the next few days too. I'm really sorry babe. You too boys!'

He smiled at me, the same smile that first caught my attention. The sides of mouth curling up a little, and the sparkle in his eyes. 'Anything for you Perrie. Do you need a lift home?'

'No it's okay babe, I'm gonna go get a drink from Starbucks and head home!'

I said goodbye to the boys, Chelsea and Beth.

I started walking down the street from school towards the Starbucks, carefree, feeling on top of the world, like I had everything I needed to keep me happy. Beautiful family, beautiful friends, beautiful boyfriend. I placed my right leg onto the road at the zebra crossing. I heard a scream. Fear, desperation, panic. It pierced through the air like a knife slicing through meat. A familiar voice.

'PERRIE!'

And the next thing I know, I'm flying through the air and I'm thrown onto the ground. The left side of my head hits the road with full impact. I feel a crack forming through my skull. My left hip supports the weight of my body, crushing itself in the process. Bruises, scratches, cuts. I roll onto my back with the last bit of life I had within me. I look up to see the sky. Ah, the beautiful sky. Mother used to describe it to me, how very beautiful it was.

The sky never failed to amaze her, filled with mysteries and endless amounts of space. Overflowing with wonders, yet so much space, so void. The sky was ever-changing, its various colors of navy blue, black, lavender, robin's egg blue, turquoise, and a fiery tangerine painting the dome above her. Sometimes the clouds were puffy and tall, other times they were no more than mere wisps, dashed across the sky by some divine paintbrush. Sometimes twinkling stars dangled from the heavens, sometimes the luminescent, white moon, and other times the blindingly radiant sun.

I saw it the way she saw it now. When the life was draining out of her and she knew the sky was her destination. Far beyond us. Far beyond me. The thought of reuniting with her was so welcoming.

With every breath, I was less lucid. Seconds felt like minutes, minutes felt like hours. People were around me, voices surrounded me. Faces i'd seen and voices i'd heard, but my brain was too damaged to put the pieces of the puzzle together. I closed my eyes, a part of me telling myself to never open them again.

I did, and when I did, I wasn't lying on the ground, motionless and covered in blood. I was standing. Free of any evidence that showed I had just been hit by a bus. My skin glowed and my clothes were clean. But, something was different. Zayn, Chelsea, Beth, Liam, Louis, Niall, Harry. They all walked near the pool of blood that lay on the ground towards an ambulance in which a person was being carried into.

Oh no, someone else got hurt.

I ran towards them, my steps lighter than they had ever been, as though I was walking on the moon. I reached out to Zayn, but I couldn't touch him. He was distraught, tears running down his cheeks. He held onto the hand of the person being carried into the ambulance.

And then I saw it. My mother's watch.

And I am updating after 2 years. Don't know what got into my but I felt like writing so :)
