01. The Workaholic, the Potato-head, and the Mastermind

Lu Keran is married to her work.

Everyone at her company knows. Her secretary Wei Chen knows. Her step-sister Liu Yuxin knows. Her step-sister-in-law Kong Xueer knows. Her best friends Xie Keyin and Zhao Xiaotang know.

But does Keran consider herself a workaholic?

Nope. Over her dead body.

Yuxin knew sooner or later, Keran would collapse. There is no way anyone can handle working over 80 hours a week. Only a concerning fainting spell would be able to talk her into taking a break.

And the long-overdue fainting spell happened right in the middle of an important board meeting with international investors.

News spread like wildfire. For the next couple of weeks, it was all the talk at KL & XL Corporations.

"Did you hear that CEO Lu collapsed in that meeting the other day?"

"Oh my god!"

"I heard if CEO Liu didn't catch her, she would have hit her head!"

"That's horrible! Is she alright?"

"Let's hope so."

Lu Keran sat on the hospital bed, looking out the window. The clouds were nice and fluffy. The sky seemed blueer than she remembered. Keran smiled at the little bird chirping on her windowsill.

Knock, knock.

Lu Keran suddenly snapped out of her trance at the sound of the knock. A nurse had come in with her lunch tray.

"Here's your lunch, CEO Lu," the nurse smiled as she carried the lunch tray over.

"Thank you," Keran smiled.

The nurse then help Keran set up the lunch table.

"Do you need anything else?" she asked.

Keran was about to shake her head when she noticed something on the lunch tray.

"Actually, you can take the potatoes back," Keran said. "I probably won't eat them, so."

"Oh, you don't like potatoes?" the nurse raised her eyebrows.

"No, I don't like them."

"My! I've never met anyone who doesn't like potatoes before!"

Keran laughed.

"Well, now you have."

The nurse took the potatoes and left, leaving Keran alone with her lunch. Keran scooped up mouthful of rice and chicken and chewed. She doesn't remember the last time she actually paid attention to the food as she ate.

"CEO Lu!!" came the booming voice from the door. "Great to see that you've regained your appetite!"

"Dr. Wang!" Keran looked up and smiled. "What's up?"

"Well, let's wait for Yuxin to arrive first. I saw her downstairs."

Just as he was speaking, Yuxin knocked and came into the room.

"Jie!" Yuxin exclaimed first and then noticed Dr. Wang in the room. "Hello, doctor."

"Hi, Yuxin," Dr. Wang smiled in acknowledgement. "Just in time. I need to talk to you two about the medical test results."

Yuxin and Keran apprehensively watched Dr. Wang read the test results. The doctor's face soon fell grave. Keran frowned.

"What's the matter?" she asked in a tiny voice. "Do I have terminal cancer? A brain tumor?"
