Virgil's POV

Alright, room 303 on the 3rd floor.. this should be it. I could do this, right? Be confident, Virgil. Confidence is key. Bad idea. I immediately start panicking. But what if it's the wrong room? Or it's in a different building? Or- I shook my head. This was the right room, I knew it was. Take a deep breath Virgil. Right. In for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, out for 8 seconds. Just like that.

I repeated the exercise a few times. Then, during my last exhale, I prepared to open the door. 3.. 2.. 1. I opened the door. Or, I tried to at least. Stupid Virgil! The key, you idiot! I sighed, inserting my key and turning it. Then I turned the knob and walked in.

There was no one there. Perfect. I had some time to prep. The first thing I did was check the clipboard hanging from the wall to see who my dormmate was. The lady behind the front desk told me I should find my own and another kid's name, and to check off the box next to mine when I arrived.

I checked off the correct box and glanced at the name underneath mine. Logan Wright. Alright. His box was checked, so he must've already stopped by. Is he still here? "Logan?" No response. I'll take that as a no.

I walked over to the black leather couch and set my stuff down. I didn't have much, just a suitcase and a backpack. Hell, the suitcase was bought for me and filled by my older brother, Remy, just days before I came here. All I really had was school supplies, clothing and any other essentials, plus a few personal items. I figured I'd settle in first before buying anything for the room.

I looked around the rest of the dorm, making a note of the different rooms. A small kitchen, the living room, two bedrooms, and a bathroom. One door had a sign taped to it saying "L. W.", so I figured it was Logan's. Which meant the other must be mine..

Picking up my stuff, I opened the door. My room was presumably identical to Logan's, maybe just mirrored. Pale yellow walls, a dark wood floor, and just enough room to house a bed, a desk, and some other things with a little bit of extra breathing room.

The bed was placed in the left corner of the room, just out of view of a small window. It was a standard single, set on a brown wooden frame and covered with a baby blue sheet and blanket. There was a striped, blue and white pillow at the head of the bed, along with a folded note.

Setting my bags down again, I picked up the paper and read the note allowed. "Virgil - this is Logan, your roommate. I apologize for not being here. I've gone to run a few errands, as they say. If you need to contact me for any reason, my number is on the counter. Best regards, Logan."

"Very formal," I remarked. "Indeed." I jumped at the sudden noise, turning around to see who I'd guess was my roommate. "Apologies, I didn't intend to startle you." The guy stuck out his hand. "I'm Logan Wright, your dormmate." I didn't shake it. Physical touch made me anxious, and I was already anxious enough. "Virgil."

Logan seemed at a loss for words for a moment. I guess he wasn't expecting such a short answer, or for me to turn down his handshake. Maybe I was a bit harsh.

While he took a moment to regain his composure or whatever, I gave him a quick once over. Brown hair, brown eyes. Nothing special. Maybe around 6 feet tall. Taller than me, at least. Logan was talking, but I only managed to tune in for half the sentence. "-to meet you, Virgil."

I blinked. "Sorry, could you uh, could you.. repeat that?" I rubbed the back of my neck. Great going, Virge. You've only known the dude for 2 minutes and you've already messed up. "I said it was a pleasure to meet you, Virgil." I nodded. "You too, Logan."

He gave me a fleeting look, probably examining me the way I'd done to him. I suddenly grew aware of how I must have looked to him. A short, pale kid, purple hair and dark eyeshadow, dressed in stereotypical emo clothing. Great first impression. He at least looked presentable, wearing a black shirt and pants, and for some reason a blue tie.

Logan cleared his throat, pulling me from my thoughts. "Since I arrived first, I decided on the right bedroom. I hope you don't mind." I shrugged. "It's whatever." Please just let me be anxious in peace. He nodded. "Well, I'll uh.. leave you to set up. If you need me I'll be in my room." He turned to leave and I began to shut the door.

"Actually," he said, turning around. I opened the door again. "Yeah?" He pulled out his phone. "Perhaps we should exchange numbers? Just- for emergency contact reasons, of course." I shrugged. "Sure. Want me to put in my number?" He handed me his phone, so I put my number in as a new contact. I pulled up the Contact app on my own phone and handed it to him. Please don't snoop, I thought. He typed something in then handed it back. "Thank you, Virgil. I'll be in my room now." I nodded as he walked off, closing the door behind him.

That was a nightmare. But at least it was over, right? I turned my attention back to my room. In the corner opposite my bed there was a small wooden desk, and what I assumed to be a closet door beside it. Opening it, I found a few shelves and a pole inserted. Yep.

I unzipped my suitcase and took out my clothes. I didn't really have much to put away, thankfully, because the closet wasn't that big. Just a few outfits, my hoodie, and a pair of sneakers. I pulled out a small, brown box I hadn't noticed before. There was a tag attached. It was from Remy.

Smiling a little, I opened the box and pulled out the jewelry. It was two pairs of earrings; two purple studs, and two brown ones. Me and Remy. I took one earring from each pair and put them on. Thanks, Remy.

I turned back to my suitcase and decided to finish unpacking. I started making a list of things I'd need to buy. But, all that could wait. First, I had to make sure that this was really the dorm I wanted..
