I wish I could sleep, but technically, I don't have a beating heart. I have ample amount of energy and it kind of sucks.
Whenever I close my eyes, I would be resting. However, every inch of my muscle is bared and ready to fight if I end up being attacked. No one, but Damien knows me, and that's how it should be.
In Rhode Island, their last and only vampire incident happened in the 1800s with the Brown Family of the mysterious illness.
It was one of the worst times as they took me in when they found out I was alone without any parents. My mother died in an accident when I was 10, and my father was nowhere to be seen. The country doctor in Exeter diagnosed it as simple as tuberculosis, but the villagers had superstitious thoughts.
Mary and Mary Olive Brown were the first ones to die from the disease. The residents of Exeter were convinced that one of the deceased was a vampire, draining the life forces out of the family members.
In 1892, a farmer named George Brown lost his wife Mary, then his daughter Mary Olive two years apart, and then his daughter Mercy. When Edwin, their son, fell seriously ill, George and the other townspeople exhumed the bodies of the first two victims.
Mary and Mary Olive's bodies were dismissed of suspicion due to the levels of decay.
Mercy's, however, had blood flowing in the heart and showed no levels of decay.
That was when I learned Mercy was one of the turned. She ended up turning me, so I didn't have to get caught in the middle of the outbreak. There, I executed my plan of escape after they burned her body to ashes and mixed it with water as tonic to give to Edwin.
The rest of her remains were buried in the cemetery.
My left eye opened once I heard a noise coming from the living room. I peered at the clock and saw it was about 5am. What was Damien doing at this hour?
I hopped out of bed carefully and opened my door. I saw Damien sharpening a tool which made me think, Oh no. "Can't sleep?" I asked with my arms crossed. That made him jump out of fear. "Oh come on, Damien. I thought you had balls of steel." He held up his weapon and pointed it at me. Either he drank all night to get this ballsy, or he was being really stupid.
"Careful, Odette." Damien said, slowly. "You do know what I am capable of doing with this stake, right?"
"Are you serious?" I asked. I kept my green eyes on the stake he pointed me at. "What, so this talk we had was just a lie to catch me off guard? News flash, I don't have humanity on my side."
"You think you had it all figured out, don't you, Odette?" he asked. "I mean, look at you. The only way to kill you is by this stake. That's not normal."
"No, Damien. You're not normal. Who are you, and what have you done to my best friend?"
"Nothing, really." he said, without a doubt.
What the heck is he doing?
Damien started to charge at me, and you know, humans are pretty slow. I backhanded his stake away and he didn't phase at all when it got tossed near the fireplace. "So, did you learn anything about me in the past two years, Damien?" I asked.
"Of course I have. You're a freak. You've got superhuman strength, speed...you can walk in the daylight, no problem...This is crazy!"
"Stand down, Damien, or I really will kill you."
He didn't listen, and I really didn't want to do it. Once he tried to reach for my head, I grabbed one of his wrists and hooked it around his back. That was when he grimaced in pain. I pushed him down to the ground, and I leaped over him. My teeth bared its fangs at him and I hissed. He struggled to fight against me, which was no use for him anyway. "Damien, I swear to god. Knock it off." I ended up slapping him across the face to knock him out. Maybe a little bit too hard. He stopped struggling and laid limp. Whoops.
I tied up Damien against a chair and it was an hour before I had to go to school again. I made sure I tied him up real good. I couldn't leave him without making him breakfast. So, I did just that. I left his food at his feet. I frowned after taking one last look at him before I stepped out of the cabin.
His dirty blond hair swept across his face messily. I really didn't peg him for someone to be a murderer, or rather, a vampire slayer. Those memories with him couldn't have been fake, could it?
I remember how excited Damien was when he found out about my secret years ago and me almost tearing his skin apart. Him admiring me and my abilities. Him also noticing how beautiful I looked under the moonlight. If I had known any better, I would've guessed he had fallen for me, then.
I did too, actually, but like I said earlier, I wasn't going into detail about it. Not like this. I sighed to myself as it felt like someone drove a stake through my heart just to break up with me. I looked at my amulet and saw the charm he had gifted me. I took my amulet off and unhooked the charm.
It was a beautiful charm. Too bad I didn't want it anymore. I threw it beside him and watched it clink to the wooden floor.
