Chapter 15: i feel nothing

Merediths POV:

The night passed slowly, keeping me trapped in a spiral of my own internal suffering. I tossed and turned and didn't settle properly until around 4am.
I could feel the warm rays of sun shine through a crack in the curtains alerting me that morning had arrived. My heart raced at the thought of going back there but i shoved it back further into the pile of my other secret hardships.

"Addie" I whispered gently stroking a stray hair from her face.
"Mhmm" she moaned opening her cobalt eyes.
"Work day" i said kissing her on the head.

"Ok I'm up" she groaned after 10 long minutes.
She swung her pale legs over the side of the mattress and pulled on her red silk robe.
"You have any surgeries today?" I inquired shutting the bathroom door. Keeping a fair amount of distance between her and me whilst i changed my clothes.
"Yeah a c-section at four so unless there's unexpected traumas I'm pretty much free except for post ops." She exclaimed, running a large comb through her scarlet hair.
"Ok cool, wanna get lunch at the cafe down the street?" I smiled unlocking the latch once i was fully covered.
"I'd love too"

We made our way downstairs and into the kitchen to grab coffee before heading out. "Hey Mer" She said coming up beside me.
"Yeah baby" i replied handing her a flask.
"You look pretty today"
"Aw thank-you, you don't"
Her face dropped as i saw confusion flare up in her eyes. "You look hot" I giggled pulling her waist close.
"You're mean" she huffed back reaching down to touch my bum.
"Dark and twisty remember"
"Oh i remember"
"I think i might have to punish you for that one" she smirked, reaching up to unbutton my shirt. However my reflexes kicked in. I shoved her hand away with such speed and reaction that even i was shocked at myself.
"Oh I'm sorry I didn't mean to do that I'm just a bit... nervous for the intern exams coming up" i panicked giving her a warm yet stiff hug.
"Oh ok" she sighed before grabbing her keys and leading me to the car.

As usual we drove to Seattle grace dazed from the lack of proper sleep. I walked through the doors before her and scurried off giving her a brief "see ya later".
I rushed up to the ICU to check on patients as a distraction until i bumped into April.
"Hey" she exclaimed bubbly.
"Hey" i replied looking around to avoid eye contact.
"Glad to see you back after a few days" She smiled before bouncing off in the direction of the burn unit. Straight to Jackson.
I couldn't help but laugh to myself, she was trying to hide it but everyone knew they were crazy about each other.
"Morning mr Peters"
"Morning doctor grey" My patient greeted, lifting up his arm so that i could draw his blood.
The day was slow and quiet from there with patients coming in and out of the Er. I hadn't seen Addie all day so i decided to go and find her.

"Hey" i said approaching her at the nurses station.
"Hey I haven't seen you all day i was going to call you about our lunch date but here you are" she smiled looking back down to her charts.
"Im gonna change out of my scrubs and ill meet you by the door ok?" I said kissing her on the head.
"Yeah ok"

Addisons POV:
After Meredith had left i rushed to the changing rooms excited for our date. Things had been off for a few days but i was hoping to get some real alone time.

"Ready for your date yet shepherd" Callies voice called from the door.
"Almost Torres and its Montgomery now. Im divorced remember." I laughed smoothing my shirt down.
"Right i forgot. Wow you look hot" She grinned.
"Thanks, not so bad yourself. Date with Erica?" I asked walking side by side.
"Yeah I'm a bit nervous but i really like her" she blushed, clutching her bag tightly.
"You'll be fine. How could she not like you Callie"
"Thanks Addie"
"Sure thing"

We made our way to the lobby and sure enough there was that sweet blonde intern. Well soon to be resident. "Ready to go" I asked linking Merediths arm.
"Yeah I'm starving"
"Me too"

I gave Callie a reassuring nod before heading off to a cute little cafe down the street. "You have much to do today?" I inquired, trying to make conversation with my girlfriend.
"No you?"
"No"

I could feel my body itching and squirming under the tension between us. It had been like this since the ultrasound and i was dying for her to let me in. "Meredith are you ok?" I asked giving her a softened look.
M) - "Yeah why?"
A) - "You just seem off"
M) - "No I'm fine I promise"
A) - "You're always fine"

We walked hand in hand all the same ignoring the awkwardness before sitting down at our table. "Would you like to order?" A waitress asked smiling down at the both of us.
"Yes please" I replied.

Once our orders were placed she began to explain a really exciting procedure she was doing with Bailey in a few weeks. A double organ transplant on a 10 year old boy.

"Wow that sounds amazing" I exclaimed looking into her eyes. I loved it when she was excited about something. It made her seem alive.
"Yeah I can't believe I'm scrubbing in and right before the intern exam. Oh will you help me study by the way." She smiled tucking into her burger.
"Yeah of course darling"

We talked nicely for the rest of the meal and it was so wonderful. Her smile was bright, her cheeks were rosy, her body was alert and for once in weeks i had my Meredith back.
"Slow down you'll choke" i giggled, watching her stuff a mound of fries into her mouth.
"We all know your a better chocker Addie" She smirked.

I almost spat out my drink at her comment. My heart was beating and i could feel my body sweating. "Don't tempt me"
Once we'd paid for the meal i decided to drive her home as we were practically done for the day.
I turned the lock in the latch as always and shit the door behind us. I felt my fingers trace up her stomach under her shirt was we were locked inside pushing her against the wall.

"Mer!" I stopped.

Purple bruises. Big purple bruises were covering her torso. "What happened, and don't tell me you fell" I stammered concerned.

"I can't" she whimpered.

"What happened darling" I asked again but more gently.

Her lips parted in defeat as her lips croaked one word.

"Derek!"
