I stood up and excused myself to the bathroom momentarily. When I got in I locked the door, turned on the sink and dialed my boyfriends number.
"Hello?" Came his voice from the other end... Jesus no matter how many times I hear his voice I always think it's someone older. It's too deep. Too mellow.
"Hey Sterls... You needed to talk to me?" I said with a hint of fear in my tone.
"Yeah... Don't worry it's nothing that bad... Your dad texted me though..."
I grit my teeth, "Yeah? And what did he want."
"Ummm... Your number." He said and I detected a hint of guilt.
"And?"
"Don't be mad..."
"AND."
"I gave it to him..."
I groaned, "Oh god please tell me you're joking..."
"Sorry babe... I know you're really upset and all... And this is a major change for you... But you can't cut him off."
"Why not?" I whined.
"Because he's your dad. And I know you love him. Just because you're building a relationship with one parent doesn't mean you can just cut off the other."
"I know..." I whine again, "But it's so confusing... It's like a big game of he said she said only the he and she are mom and dad." I sigh and throw up my arm even though I know he can't see me.
"I know babe... I have to go to work though... You better call me later."
"Yes sir. Love you, bye."
I ended the call thinking how much I wished I had a flip phone I could just snap shut. I put my head in my hands. It's not like I don't want to talk to my dad... I just don't have anything to say to him. I fucked up. I mean royally fucked up our relationship and don't even know what I could possibly say to make it better.
I huffed angrily. How dare he just call, give me bad news, and leave! I sit down on the lid of the toilet and cross my arms.
"Coooooort!" There was knocking at the door. "You ok in there?" It was Bryan. I sighed. "Yes. No. Kinda. I don't know." I heard a chuckle, "Well I hate to rush you but I have to pee so bad I can taste it."
"HEY!" I squealed indignantly, "Why does everyone steal my sayings!" I huff and throw the door open. He laughs and I put my hands on my hips. "Sorry! They're just so catchy!" He winks and I slap his shoulder. "Perv." He winks again, "You know it babe."
I walk out of his way and down the stairs to where the rest of the group is still set up. "So now what?" I ask rubbing my arm, a nervous habit I haven't gotten around to stopping. "Now. We get to..." Jil smiles and Steve starts a drumroll, "Play Mario Kart!" I raise my hand and shriek "I CALL YOSHI!!!!" I hear collective protests and punch the air. "HAHA FEEL THE WRATH OF MY EGG KART!!!!"
I bring out my ancient pink DS and watch everyones face slowly transform to doubt. "That's not a handheld... That's a dinosaur!" Brandon laughs. "Oh haha! She has served me well for many years. I'd like to see you jerks beat me with those new fangled 3DS." I snort.
"BRING IT ON YOSHI GIRL!!" Yells Bryan. I laugh and start up my system smiling widely just before Jil gives me a suspicious look.
"Who called?" She whispered, I grit my teeth. To lie or not to lie, that is the question. I sigh, "Sterling. My dad wants me to call him." "You don't want to?" "No... Yes... I don't know... It's complicated." "Yeah I kinda got that from the interrogation." She rolls her eyes with a grin.
"Hey chatterboxes! We gonna play or what?!?!" Steve yells impatiently. "Yeah yeah ok! You'll be sorry! Only one person can beat me at mario kart." I grin and hope that I'll make him proud.
