Chapter 16: The female nerds unite.
I begin to process what just happened over lunch as we go over the American Literature syllabus. I've had this teacher 3 times already today so I've made a good impression already, now I can focus on the predicament at hand. How am I going to change this poor girls mind about me... I would love it if we could be friends however I don't make female friends. Unless I have the overwhelming urge to be stabbed in the back.
I don't get much time to think on it however before we are dismissed and I make my way to the choir room. getting used to the stares I simply take a seat beside Jill.
"Hello Jill. I'm sorry about lunch I think I should introduce myself, I'm Cortney Stevenson. I'm pleased to meet you!" is what I would have said if I'd had any social skills at all. But I don't. So I said this:
"Ummm... hi... I'm Cortney Stevenson... we met at lunch... sorry."
She looked up from the book and sniffed slightly, she looked as though she were silently judging me. Well whatever she thought must have been good because she smiled showing off her red braces and said warmly:
"Hello Cortney Stevenson, I am Jillian Williams. You may call me Jil may I call you Cort?"
I sighed in relief and changed my awkward grin to a genuine smile,
"Yes of course you may! so... are you alto?"
she scoffed "Oh GOD no! soprano all the way."
"Me too!"
We exchanged girlish giggles before launching into a discussion on the book she was currently reading, Inheritance which I had read in the spring. Remarkably we shared the same scorn for Eragon for leaving instead of being with Arya and a sense of loss when Saphira began spending all her time with Firnen this lasted throughout the entire class in hushed whispers while our choir director went over yet another syllabus.
Jil and I walk out of class together still in deep conversation (this time about Harry Potter) and we see outside the door the four guys, two of course carrying laptops under their arms talking animatedly I have a hunch on what they're taking about. Jil apparently does to because she whistles loudly, the hall turns to look at her and the boys fall silent shuffling forward as if they are terrified of what Jil might do.
Jil grins mischievously before launching into interrogation, "so what was so exciting over there?"
The second laptop guy I've been informed by Jillian that his name is Steven Johnson begins to explain that they were worried we weren't going to like each other.
I snort out a laugh, "Well we are close as close can possibly be at this point. Looks like y'all will have to make room for a new member of the nerd family."
I'm met with 5 very genuine smiles and great hugs. I breath a sigh of relief.
