But the door needed no assistance helping the two at the door to be known. It was opened quickly; and there stood Tom Buchanan with a sly smile upon his face, "Nick! I was wondering where you were, we've been trying to reach you on the telephone and you weren't picking up. Neither was that Gatsby, either." He spoke quickly- but that hurried nature soon left when he noticed the tiny blonde child sitting within Nick's arms. He furrowed his brows tightly and pursed his lips before speaking, "Who is this?"
Nick and Gatsby both froze within their spots before Nick instinctively spoke, "He's another one of my cousins!" He blurted out in a hurry, he then cleared his throat when he saw the wide eyed expression on Tom's face, "-and uh, as for Gatsby... he was ill when I came to get him, fever and all." He sighed and shook his head, "I could hear him coughing from all the way upstairs."
"Cousin, you say?" Tom knelt down slightly to look at the boy who stared worriedly back. He felt fear rise within his chest and his eyes tried to look back to Nick- but instead, his body had retreated against Nick's chest to hide.
Tom chuckled, "Shy one, isn't he? What's his name?" He asked.
"Jackson- but he prefers to be called Jack. Isn't that right?" Nick said, nudging Gatsby who soon promptly nodded afterwards. Gatsby seriously wanted nothing to do with this new man- he was quite intimidating and all the more unnerving. Tom just gave Gatsby some sort of...vibe that did not sit well with him. Nonetheless, he turned his face out from where he was hiding and stared up at Tom bleakly.
Tom smiled gently before he heard the sound of both Daisy and Jordan laughing- he turned to face Nick once more and pushed the door open wider, "Come on in, we've been waiting for you to get here. Shame that Gatsby couldn't make it-" his voice trailed off slightly at the mention of Gatsby. He seemed more annoyed than anything when the name left his lips.
"I don't think he meant anything by it, Gatsby would never pass up an opportunity to spend time with us." Nick spoke, carrying the boy within his arms while following after Tom- a servant behind them closing the door.
"Jay is a very nice person, Tom." Nick spoke.
"Oh, yes, I believe it. Nice indeed." Tom agreed half-heartedly. He truly didn't seem to care much for what Nick had to say about the man- he was aware of his intentions with Daisy, but he couldn't let Nick know that just yet. It was apparent that he didn't like him, but for Nick, it was clear. After all, he was the one trying to get Daisy and Gatsby reunited with each other. Tom simply just stared at the boy for a few minutes- then turned back.
"Nicky!" Daisy exclaimed when she came across the three entering the room, her eyes immediately noticed Gatsby...staring at her as well. Gatsby gazed at her hesitantly, afraid if he looked away she might be upset. He shifted a few times within Nick's arms and tugged on him, "Down?" He whispered.
Nick agreed, placing Gatsby down upon the floor and watched just to see Gatsby hide behind his leg. Nick almost melted at the sight, but he had to remember who this was. He turned around to see Gatsby staring at Daisy still- some things just never changed.
"Who's this little one here, Nicky?" Daisy spoke, approaching them and kneeling down slightly to get a better look of the child- he was absolutely precious in her eyes. But Gatsby became shy at her approaching him, turning to hide within Nick's leg once more. He couldn't seem to comprehend why he was so shy and embarrassed to be in her presence, but here he was...red faced as ever.
"Another cousin of mine." Nick said hurriedly, "His name is Jack."
"He looks very... familiar, in a way." Daisy mumbled, but then shook it off and smiled kindly to the boy who lightly poked his head out to look at her. She noticed this and held out her hand to him, "Don't worry, sweetheart, I won't bite."
Gatsby felt a little better at her lighthearted joke and inched closer to her. She smiled at him, "I'm Daisy. It's very nice to meet a little gentleman like you." She hummed.
"Daisy." Gatsby spoke quietly, then his heart dropped. He knew her. Oh, how he knew this woman... he inched closer to her and took her hand gently, holding onto it tightly, "I-It's nice to meet you too, Miss Daisy..."
Tom watched from a distance, his face looked one of even more annoyance. But also one of suspicion- he could see how the boy looked at Daisy. But Nick noticed how Tom looked at the little Gatsby as well, was he really jealous of a child? How ridiculous. Nick shook away the thought, refocusing his attention back on Daisy and Gatsby-- who seemed to be getting along very well. Gatsby was currently commenting on her hair piece and how lovely her hair was- Daisy simply chuckled and thanked him gratefully when he spoke of her hair. He smiled softly, the two interacting was absolutely precious.
"Pammy would absolutely adore him, don't you think so Tom?" asked Daisy- which Tom only became wide eyed at the idea, "Oh- um, I guess she would. She does need some new friends after all."
Gatsby looked up at Tom- then his eyes averted back over to Daisy, "Can we go now? I'm hungry." he mumbled to her, in which Daisy nodded and smiled at him, "Of course we can, sweetheart. Tom? Would you mind starting up the car? We'll meet you out there soon."
Tom gave a slight nod and went off with Nick and Jordan to the cars, leaving her and the little Gatsby by themselves. Gatsby felt an increasing sense of nervousness overwhelm him. But that soon dwindled down to nothing when she scooped him up into her arms and nestled her face against his head, "You're absolutely adorable." she chuckled.
Gatsby blushed softly, "Thank you, Miss Daisy..." he hummed to her, looking up to see a smile upon her face.
He remembered her...but why? Who was she?
