The sound of the gunshot is still ringing in my ears as Mary slowly crumples to the floor. My heartbeats increase rapidly as so many emotions overwhelm me that I don't know what to feel.
"MARY!" Vince roars, veins bulging. The man surges forward, lunging at the woman's lifeless body before he's quickly restrained again by the guards pinning his arms behind his back. Giving up, he falls to his knees, tear tracks making their way through the dirt and grime on his face.
"You... shot her," I whisper in disbelief, drawing my eyes away from Mary's bleeding figure to Ava Paige's face. Even the doctor looks rattled by Janson's actions. But she shakes her head, regaining her composure.
"Some things... must be done. For the greater good."
I curl my lips back in a snarl.
"Tell that to the countless people who have died because of you and your shitty organization." Janson clenches his jaw, raising his arm again and pointing the pistol at my forehead.
"Do it, then. Shoot me," I spit at him. His finger closes around the trigger, ready to pull it back when Dr. Paige places her hand on the muzzle, pressing it firmly down.
"Janson," she says, a hint of warning in her voice. I tilt my head to one side, raising an eyebrow at her.
The man clenches his jaw tightly but stays still. I let out a snort.
"Yeah, that's what I thought."
"Let's move this along," Janson snaps. "Load them up. Let's go!"
The guards start manhandling us, forcing us towards the waiting bergs. Sonya struggles, trying to elbow and kick at them to no avail.
"All of these people. Get rid of them," Janson mutters to his men under his breath.
"Get rid of them?" Thomas says incredulously.
"Shoot them, kill them, I don't care," Janson replies carelessly. He turns his back, preparing to go.
"Let's go, let's go! Hurry up!"
Two more guards seize me.
"Don't. Touch. Me," I snarl at them. Obviously, they don't listen.
"STAND BACK! EVERYONE STAND BACK!"
Abruptly, their heavy hands release me and almost push me back towards Thomas. Caught off guard by the sudden shift in weight, I go stumbling backwards into Minho who grabs hold of me before I fall on my ass.
"Wha-"
"Hold your fire!" Janson shouts.
Thomas is holding something in his outstretched hand. A familiar, blinking red light. The bomb. He waves his arm back and forth with wild eyes, causing the W.C.K.D guards to step back fearfully.
Newt and Frypan break free and huddle around Thomas, the five of us forming a little huddle.
"Thomas. Put it down." Ava steps forward confidently, her voice calm but with an edge of warning.
"Let them all go," he bites back."You know I can't do that, Thomas. Put the bomb down, and no one gets hurt."
"You're not in the position to make deals right now, lady," I hiss at her.
"Thomas, please stop," Teresa's crying again, choking on the words that come out of her mouth. "They promised we'd be safe. All of us!"
"And I'm supposed to trust you now?" Thomas's voice cracks, betrayal evident across his face.
