My Arrogant Neighbor

My first night sleeping in my new apartment wasn't exactly how I had pictured it. When I woke up, I was hoping to be peacefully sprawled out on my new bed with the New York sunlight trying to peek through my Victorian curtains. Instead, I woke up with my face in the floor literally.

I guess I had rolled off the couch and hit the side of the coffee table because my head had a dull pain in it. Blinking my eyes a few times, I noticed that it was dark in the room. You know how you can tell when you wake up in the middle of the night without looking outside or looking at the clock, well I had that feeling.

This was not a great way to start my day. I had my internship starting in a few hours and I knew I wouldn't be able to fall back asleep. Groaning, I placed my hands beside my shoulders and pushed myself up from the floor. As my eyes adjusted to my surroundings, I glanced out the window to see it pitch black outside but suddenly a streak of lightening flash across the sky, followed by heavy raindrops.

My eyebrows furrowed but in my dazed state, I shrugged it off and stood up to walk into the kitchen. Along the way, I grabbed my phone from the coffee table and saw I had several messages. I checked the first ones from my brother and saw that they were all typical.

Sent 11:17- Tegan, call me. I know I said in the morning but mom is freaking out because you haven't called her.

Sent 11:53- Seriously, Tee. Call mom and then me.

Sent 12: 36- Oh yeah, forgot there's a time difference. Never mind, call in the morning. And by any chance, do you know if Schmidt made it over to her grandparents okay?

I rolled my eyes at the last one and sent my Alex a message saying I was okay and had my internship in a few hours. I was about to place my phone down when my ringtone started blaring through the speakers. Looking at the caller I.D., I noticed it was my mother. Does this girl ever sleep?

"Hello mom," I sighed playfully. I could hear her grumble something on the other side before a loud banging noise echoed through the phone. "Is everything okay over there?"

"What, oh, of course, Tegan. It's about time you answer that damn phone of yours. I've been calling your brother to see if he's heard from you all day. I'm pretty sure he's bald now."

I laughed at her statement. My mother had always been like Alex in a way. Other than looks, they were quite similar in their personalities. Alex had grown up side by side with my mother considering my father's job was international. Since he was rarely home, Alex quickly learned to pay the substitute patriarch of the family.

"He probably is, you know how he gets about us."

"Yes, such a brute. Anyways, how's New York dear? You didn't call and I got concerned," my mother chided. Another banging noise was heard on the side of the phone and I furrowed my eyebrows.

"Mom, what are doing over there?"

There was a moment of complete silence on the phone.

"Um, nothing Tegan. I have to go now, good luck tomorrow!" My mother hung up the phone abruptly leaving me with a few unanswered questions. I brought the phone down from my ear with such hesitancy. Hearing my mother's voice had brought that feeling of nostalgia back. I quickly shoved it away though before it could have it affect and sauntered to the fridge.

I'm guessing by the light that turned on when I opened it that my electricity had started working. Reaching in, I grabbed a bottle of water. As I unscrewed the cap to take a sip, a sudden banging from outside in the hallway captured my attention.
