"Everyone seems to have met the deadline requirements for this month. The cover is outstanding and this issue should be out on the corners by Monday. That's all for today, everyone rest up this weekend and I will see you on Monday."
Grey nodded off stiffly to the room and made her way out with her arms behind her back. I followed in suit trying to keep up with her long strides.
"Tegan, have a seat," Grey motioned to the chair in front of her desk. I sat down hesitantly and crossed my legs.
Grey stared at me for a few moments and then smiled. "I think it's time for your first real assignment. I know you've been to the new club Inferno with Arden and Antonio." I opened my mouth to ask but she raised her hand. "Antonio is a gossip. I want you to write an article on the new club. It will be due next friday. That is all."
She placed her glasses on her face and turned towards her computer and started typing. I was left shocked in my seat for a few seconds. I've only been here five days and it was only supposed to be an internship to learn the ropes. Not write articles for the most high end magazine company in New York.
"You want me to write an article? But I don't know..."
She turned to me and folded her hands in front of her. "But you do, you just don't know it. You went to school and took several writing classes so I know you enjoy it. Your job now is to sit at a desk and take my calls and organize paperwork. I want it by next week that's final."
I knew the discussion wasn't up for grabs anymore. Politely I excused myself and walked out. Arden was walking by and saw me.
"Did Grey yell at you for not stapling at a 45 degree angle," she chuckled.
"No, she gave me an assignment." I breathed out and Arden stopped laughing.
"She what?"
"Inferno, she wants me to write an article on it by next friday. I can't write an article I just started working here. How do I even write an article about a club I can't even legally get into?"
Arden made her way around my desk and leaned against it. "Do you not see the opportunity she's just bestowed upon you."
I looked up and shook my head. Arden lightly scoffed. "Tee, she gets a new intern every week. You are the first one she has asked to write an article. You must've done something right."
"I can't write this article Arden. I couldn't have even gotten into that club if it wasn't for you."
"Look, I will help get you in tonight and show you what to look for but all the fluff that goes around it is up to you."
I felt sick to my stomach. There was no way I could write this article without it looking like chump change next to everyone else that works here. Arden went to Columbia for heck's sake and I haven't even touched college yet.
This article was my make or break deal with Grey and I know if I fail I'll lose this internship. For the rest of the day I researched articles written by Beauty Magazine to help give me some insight but each one was different. Nothing was similar and there was no template to it. By 5 o'clock most of the floor had left for the weekend including Grey.
She walked past my desk on the way out with her purse in her hand and sunglasses already on, not once looking my way.
"Are you ready to go?" It was Arden's voice who brought me out of my trance from the computer screen. I sighed and reached for my bag.
"Not really, but yes."
Arden laughed. "Stop worrying about the article. Tonight we drink and dance and have fun."
