A cool autumn breeze, the sun was shining bright and the morning was filled with happiness but inside at Hogwarts, a storm was about to approach. It was Monday. Belinda was heading towards her Defense Against the Dark Arts class. Tom was awaiting her. He was standing proudly, ready to finally challenge someone to his level. In Tom's eyes, he was better, but deep down he knew that their power matched up evenly.
"Ah, look who it is," Tom said, looking at Belinda as she walked through the door.
Belinda smiled sarcastically and walked to one side of the room. Next to Abraxas and Olivia.
"Good Morning class!" yelled the teacher from the top of the dueling pad. "Today you will be dueling your classmates," "I will assign you partners and you will be asked to duel based on the spells you have learned in class," The teacher walked back and forth speaking.
"Rule number one, no unforgivable curses will be used during dueling!" The teacher yelled, looking a Tom.
Tom rolled his eyes and looked back at the teacher.
"Rule number two! I will be assigning partners based on equal skill level, there will be no whining or grumbling because of your partners," The teacher looked back at Belinda and began talking.
"Finally! Rule three! Have Fun!" The teacher clapped his hands and started pairing up students.
"Hmm, Olivia and Abraxas!"
Abraxas and Olivia paired up and stepped to the side.
"I thought I would be paired up with someone more powerful," Olivia whispered to Belinda, smiling.
"Seriously Liv, I'm right here," Abraxas said, slightly chuckling.
Olivia smiled and turned to face the teacher.
"Tom and Belinda!"
The room went silent for a second. The room was shocked. Tom simply walked towards Belinda.
"I'm not even surprised," Belinda said.
Tom turned to her and scoffed.
A few students had gone already and Tom was impatiently waiting, hoping that they would be called next.
"Belinda and Tom!" The teacher yelled, looking around the room for the two students.
Belinda grinned at Olivia and walked up to the dueling pad, Tom followed with no hesitation and stood across from her. They looked at each other both ready as they could ever be.
"Step forward, then pace 10 steps, understood?"
Belinda and Tom nodded at the teacher and began to count
"..9..10!"
"Serpensortia!" Tom yelled.
"Incendio!" Belinda yelled, burning the snake to dust.
"Petrificus Totalus!" Tom said with a flick of his wand.
Belinda perfectly deflected it and conjured water to build up.
"Aguamenti!" The large water that was conjured, hurdled towards Tom. Tom didn't understand the shape, it wasn't quite clear. With quick thinking, Tom used a deflection spell causing all the water to sprinkle on the classmates. A few groans were heard but everyone was still paying attention, very carefully.
"Serpensortia!" Belinda called quickly. Tom scoffed and was about to say a spell when Belinda interrupted.
"Engorgio!" The snake grew as tall as the ceiling and was hissing at Tom, violently.
"Evanesco!" The snake suddenly disappeared.
Belinda was upset and was ready to end the duel. That's when she had an idea. Clever, but risky.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" She yelled. The class began to chuckle until they saw what Belinda had planned. The spell slowly picked up Tom and the teacher turned to Belinda, amazed. It takes a great deal of power to pick up a human being off the ground with a levitating spell.
The whole class was in awe and Tom was shocked himself but his amazement was soon drowned out by fury.
"You little- Expel-" Before Tom could finish his sentence Belinda already had taken action.
She moved her wand harshly towards the floor and Tom fell with a thud. The whole class erupts into laughter. Belinda scoffed and held out her wand. "Expelliarmus," she said in a graceful tone, just to annoy Tom.
Tom with red on his face and no wand in his hand stomped out of the classroom with his hair messy from the fall.
Belinda gave the teacher a small nod and smile and rushed out the door, both wands in her hand.
"Wait! Tom!" she yelled. Holding out his wand.
"Your wand!"
Tom turned around and snatched the wand with Belinda's hand in his. He pulled her close to his face, his breath slowly tickling her nose, and whispered through gritted teeth.
"Next time you won't be so lucky," He said, his jaw was clenched and bruised.
Belinda pushed him off her hand and looked at him annoyed.
"Leave me alone or your next destination will be the infirmary, oh wait, the fall must have done some damage you should get that checked out, " she said with a touch of sarcasm, pointing at his bruises.
"Stupef-" Tom said ready to fire back with the Stupefy spell but just then a teacher walked up and stopped the chaos.
"Expelliarmus! Tom Riddle and Belinda Blacksmith! Detention this afternoon for both of you! Tom, I am disappointed!" The teacher yelled at the two, surprised by the insinuating events.
The both of them nodded and Tom rolled his eyes after the teacher had left.
"Perfect just what I needed an entire afternoon wasted because of you!" Belinda shot at Tom.
"Oh please as if you had anything better to do," Tom said.
Belinda flicked her hair back and turned back at Tom.
"As a matter of fact I did," she said quickly before turning back and walking in the other direction.
Tom looked at the windows and saw the sun reflect through a stain-glassed snake. The green hit him ever so slightly and he began to turn around. Just when a thought dawned upon him.
No one has ever beat me in a duel.
The words kept hitting Tom throughout the day. Until the time came, detention.
