"You're very tense." Ian murmured.
He had the white robe on, his muscled arms peeking through the fabric. His movements were careful and gentle, as he handled the blood vials under the microscope, yet every vein on his hands popped out. He managed to get us a permanent key and we strode through the rooms very often.
"I'm aware." I snapped. I was sitting on the metallic table and stared at the vials of blood next to me.
The blood milkshake was in my hands and I sipped the content through the straw furiously, possibly attracting attention to myself and my problems.
We were doing experiments on vampire blood. Truthfully, it was a dream come true. If there was a way to use the vampire blood and sequence exactly what in it made it so powerful, I could find a way to cure so many diseases. Not to mention, I'd probably get a Nobel Prize.
But today, my heart wasn't in it.
"What happened?" Ian didn't look away from the samples under the microscope.
"Caiden is hanging out with a girl." I let out a sigh.
"Oh, how dare he?" Ian didn't even glance at me.
"She likes him." I played with the loose strand of my hair. Honestly, I didn't know why Ian bothered with me in the first place, I was most likely incredibly boring to him.
"Friends like each other, Chloe." He answered.
"You don't get it!" I pouted. "She likes him. And he lied to me when I asked who was calling. And she knew I was there and he got rid of me pretty quickly-"
"You listened to his phone call?"
"Damn right I did."
"He's been in love with you for years, Chloe, I doubt that changed so quickly, especially after you've finally told him how you felt." Ian lifted his gaze off the microscope.
His light brown pushed back hair turned slightly golden between all other contrasting colours, metallic and white. His brown eyes narrowed at me and my concerns and I rolled mine in return. There was a strange dynamic between us; a mentorship and a friendship. But there was also tension, mostly coming from my supressed vampire horniness.
Sometimes I wondered whether I was the only one that felt this tension.
"I don't want to mess things up." I shrugged. Ian returned to staring through the microscope and scribbling something on a piece of paper next to him.
To my surprise, Ian majored in math and biology and finance. It turned out he's been using his vampire years rather constructively; constantly learning and mastering new things.
"Just stay honest with the kid." He murmured.
"Don't call him kid." I frowned.
"Did you tell him about your source of nutrition?" Ian asked and I squeezed my fingers.
Caiden knew about Barbies and he was not thrilled about it. In my head, that was the most moral thing I've done in regards to drinking blood. Barbies wanted to help me in exchange for my protection.
But Caiden thought it wasn't moral even though they agreed to do it. He found the entire thing disgusting. I understood that, but there was no way for me to change that.
"He knows about Barbies." I sighed. "But, he does not know about our escapades and I'd love to keep it that way."
"He's going to find out, you know?" Ian lifted his gaze again and changes the samples. "And then he's not only going to be mad because he doesn't approve, but also because you lied to him."
