Caiden's gaze hardened when he noticed my fangs, his hand firmly put before Angie, just to keep her safe. Maybe that was what he's been missing with me, feeling like a protector.
I looked over him with distaste, but I had to admit he looked better. His hair was finally clean and the dark circles under his eyes were almost completely gone. Even his hazel eyes lacked their usual bloody red.
And humanly, selfishly, knowing he was better off without me hurt.
"What's going on, Chloe?" Caiden asked through his teeth.
I let out a laugh, "Cai, you can tell something's wrong, so why don't you take your little girlfriend, walk away and spare us both?"
He flinched, "If something is going on in your world, maybe we should all know about it."
"Why?" I raised my eyebrow. "So you can shame me about it? It's none of your business."
Angie's distraught eyes snapped at Caiden, "What's going on?"
"Nothing." Caiden's gaze remained on me. "Chloe is a little on edge."
"Oh, right." I let out a bitter laugh. "Chloe is on edge."
The way his hand dropped to Angie's forearm made me angrier than it should have. Maybe because he didn't even bother to hide it, he just blatantly walked over to me and let me know there was something going on between the two of them.
Caiden's eyes narrowed, "Can I talk to you? Alone."
"I'm not the one with the girl on my arm." I smiled thinly, aware I was probably making Angie very uncomfortable.
Her timid eyes danced over my face, looking for an explanation, but I wasn't about to give it to her.
"Angie, can you give us a moment?" Caiden's expression turned significantly gentler when he looked at her.
Angie nodded, bowed her head and headed towards the building. I put my hand on my hip and flashed my fanged grin his way. Perhaps it was time to get something to eat before I sunk my teeth into his little girlfriend.
I glanced towards Angie, "I see you're not wasting any time."
"Chloe-"
"Spare me." I waved away. "What do you want?"
Caiden composed himself, "I want you to tell me what's going on."
"Why do you think something's going on?" I cocked my head.
Caiden swallowed, "Something is happening, isn't it? Can you at least do me the curtesy of telling me whether we're in danger?"
"Depends on whether you consider a wild vampire cult running around as danger."
His mouth dropped, "Should we leave campus?"
"Why does everyone suddenly want to leave this place?" I asked. "Everything is under control, we're handling it."
"Really?" Caiden eyed me. "What happened in that bar that exploded?"
"Excuse me?"
"My gut is telling me you had something to do with it." Caiden said, his hazel eyes filled with concern, but it wasn't concern for my well-being, which I couldn't help but resent.
How could I possibly make sense of my messy heart amidst an upcoming battle?
I couldn't. And I wasn't about to. This was bigger than me and my damn problems.
So, for once, I swallowed my pride and my own ego.
"Cai," My fangs retracted on their own, "I think you should take Angie and leave campus for a while."
