Nikki woke up with a gasp and a coughing fit due to the toxic air of the Upside Down. She laid there on the cold floor as she gathered her breath. Her whole body ached from the power overload she put herself through at the school. Even after defeating the Demogorgon her stomach still didn't stop hurting. The last thing she'd seen was a flash of red before the darkness came and swallowed her up.
She looked around at the familiar, yet unfamiliar room. It looked like the classroom she had once been in before the Demogorgon came in and took her away to this place.
She sat up and looked at the chalkboard in front of her. It had a big dent from where El had thrown it in.
El.
She was so busy getting used to the new environment, she had almost completely forgotten about her sister. She looked behind her and saw El laying not too far away from her.
"El." Her voice cracked after not being used in who knows how long she'd been unconscious for. She crawled over to her sister. She looked at El and immediately felt the pit in her stomach deepen much worse than ever before. El's face was pale...so pale. Nikki could have mistaken her for a ghost, if she knew what that was at the time.
"El." She shook her sister gently, trying to get her to wake up. She got no response in return. Nikki had seen a lot of people dead in her childhood and she hated knowing that her sister was as pale as some of those people.
"El!" Her voice broke as she tried to shake her awake again. After getting no response again, she leaned down to hear if she was breathing.
She felt her heart break as dreaded silence filled the room. El had no breath. Nikki was alone.
"El." She whispered hoping for a miracle.
No miracle came.
She cried silently as she stood up weakly and walked over to the door of the classroom. She looked back at her unmoving sister one last time before walking slowly down the hallway.
She hated herself at that moment. She hated that she couldn't protect her sister after all the times El had protected her. She hated that she wasn't strong enough to fight the Demogorgon alone. She hated everything.
She hated the lab for experimenting on her and El. She hated having her childhood ripped away from her. She hated seeing so many people fall dead at her feet, even if she wasn't the one that killed them.
She hated her powers. She hated how they could literally suck away life. She hated how tired she had gotten after using even the tiniest bit of her powers. She hated the shots she had gotten for making her tired after she used her powers because they were too strong. She hated the amount of pain her powers put her through.
She hated how she lost her sister, one of the only people that actually tried to help her. She hated how she had put the boys in danger. And she hated how she was now stuck, alone in a cold, dark, toxic place like the Upside Down.
She screamed out of hatred, pain and loss as the words of hate floated around in her brain. Before she even knew what was going on a ball of blue flew out of her hands, hitting the wall. The bricks on the wall broke slightly as made another blue orb and threw it against the wall.
She may not have gotten to control much of her life and sorrows, but she knew one thing for sure. She refused to die in the Upside Down.
Blue orbs hit the wall one after another until there was a hole through it with a layer of red over it. She broke the layer of red and pushed herself to the other side.
She landed on her feet panting but she felt like she could run for miles. She looked back at the hole in the wall to see the red layer had already healed itself and the brick seemed to be closing up. She stepped away from it knowing that when it closes, she would be saying goodbye to her sister.
She wasn't ready for that yet. As the hole continued closing, she ran. She ran through the school, out the back doors, and towards the woods. She didn't know where she was going. All she knew was that she had to get away. From the bad men, from the Upside Down, from her life.
She ran until she started to feel her energy drain from using her powers. Even then she pushed through it. She wanted to outrun her problems.
She didn't stop running till her legs eventually gave out on her, sending her tumbling to the ground. She laid there wanting to get back up and run again. But she knew if she tried, she would go two feet before falling down again.
She tried to calm herself down from the very eventful day and night but it ended with her breaking down. She sobbed into her hands thinking of all she lost.
El was dead.
And she probably couldn't go near the boys now without getting them in trouble. She really wanted to be with them right now, though. But she knew that wouldn't be able to happen.
So she cried until her heavy eyelids couldn't open anymore.
That night she had a dreamless sleep. She floated in a black abyss and hoped she would stay there forever.
***
The next day she was jolted awake from the sound of a helicopter not too far away from where she was. She knew she had to move or she would get caught.
And so, with tired legs, she started running all over again.
Leaving the town of Hawkins behind.
