"Nikki!" A female's voice called from the other side of Nikki's door. A light knock came before the door opened with a creak. "Nikki, it's time to wake up."
Nikki open her eyes and blinked a couple times adjusting to the light coming through the window. It didn't help that the women opened the blinds slightly letting even more light pour into the room.
She sat up on her bed as the women turned to her with a smile on her face. "Good morning." She said pleasantly.
Nikki couldn't help but smile. "Morning."
"Now," the lady clapped her hands cheerfully before leaving the room and calling back to Nikki, "get up. It's Halloween. The most underrated of all the holidays!"
Nikki laughed lightly before throwing the covers off her bed and made her away to the living just outside her room.
"So here's the plan for today." The lady walked in the living from the kitchen with a plate of breakfast foods in her hand. She sat the plate on the coffee table and sat on the couch, patting the seat next for her to take. "I was thinking that when I get home around 6 tonight, we can put on a scary movie and have you try some Halloween candy."
Nikki shrugged and sat next to her. "I don't know, Gwen."
"Oh, come on." Gwen whined playfully lightly hitting Nikki's leg. "Look, if the movie gets too scary, we can always put in a different movie. And as for the candy, that is non negotiable, okay? I've had you here for how many months and you still haven't had a single piece of candy?"
"Almost twelve." Nikki answered the brunette haired girl.
"Exactly!" Gwen chirped. "You need to try to be a kid. And candy is a good place to start. I swear, you have not lived until you tried a Snickers bar."
Nikki shook her head knowing she wouldn't win the argument. "Fine."
"Yay!" Gwen smiled standing up and heading towards the coat rack starting to get ready to leave. "Now, remember. I have a dinner party with the teachers and staff after school so I won't be here for dinner. Please eat something. I doesn't have to be a full meal just as long as you eat that along with your breakfast, okay?"
"Okay." Nikki said looking at the plate of food in front of her.
"Good. And don't forget that I got you that new book. If you don't know a word mark it in the book and we'll go over it, okay?"
"Yup." Nikki nodded.
"Okay." Gwen patted her pockets making sure she had everything. Once she was ready to leave she turned to Nikki one last time. "Have a good day. I'll see you when I get home."
"Bye."
Nikki watched the door open and close then listened as a car turned on and pulled out of the driveway.
Once the noise faded away she looked around at the small house she was living in. Today she would be alone for a little longer than she liked.
Today is going to be a long day. She thought.
***
"Adorable, baby." Mrs. Sinclair smiled proudly at her son in a ghostbusters costume. "Just adorable!"
As she snapped another photo his little sister, Erica, rolled her eyes. "God. You are such a nerd."
Lucas glared at her. "Shut up."
"No wonder why you only hang out with boys."
"Erica!" Her mom scolded her.
"Just the facts." Erica shrugged as Lucas struck another pose and his mom took another photo. He caught Erica's eye as she mouthed, "Nerd."
He rolled his eyes and thought it was the best time to leave. He hopped on his bike ready to take on the day.
Little did he know that his day would be ruined quickly.
***
Lucas, Mike and Dustin all pulled up to the school wearing the same ghostbusters costumes and singing the Ghostbusters theme song.
They parked their bikes and shouted happily in unison, "Who you gonna call?"
"Ghostbusters!" Will joined them.
"Hey, Spengler!" Mike laughed cheerfully.
"Egon!" Lucas yelled happily giving Will a quick hug.
"Venkman!" Will greeted returning the hug.
Mike's smiled melted from his face as he looked at Lucas's name tag. "Whoa! Whoa!"
"What?" Lucas asked confused.
"Why are you Venkman?" Mike scowled at the name tag.
Lucas shrugged. "Because I'm Venkman."
"No," Mike shook his head starting to get angry, "I'm Venkman."
"Why can't there be two Venkman's?" Will asked trying to stop the fight before it got worse.
"Because there's only one Venkman in real life." Mike snapped looking at Lucas. "We planned this months ago. I'm Venkman, Dustin's Stantz, you're Egon, and you're Winston."
"I specifically didn't agree to Winston." Lucas shook his head.
"Yes, you did!" Mike raised his voice.
"I don't think he did." Will said trying to remember.
"No one wants to be Winston, man." Lucas argued.
"What's wrong with Winston?" Mike wondered.
"What's wrong with Winston?" Lucas repeated and looked at Mike like he was stupid. "He joined the team super late, he's not funny, and he's not even a scientist!"
"Yeah, but he's still cool."
"If he's cool, then you be Winston."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
"B-because..." Mike stuttered.
"B-because you're not black?" Lucas mocked Mike.
"I didn't say that!" Mike got defensive.
"You thought it."
"I didn't say that!" Mike repeated.
"Mike-"
"Guys!" Dustin yelled interrupting the fight. When Lucas looked towards him, his back faced him as he looked at the other students. "Why is no one else wearing costumes?"
Lucas looked at every kid. There were no costumes. Not one.
What a way to ruin Halloween. Lucas shook his head at the thought.
