Acacia's POV

"WOOO HOOO!" I hollered in delight at the feeling of flying. It just made me feel so free. And after being trapped on an island my whole life, without really being allowed to leave the village at all, free was a feeling I savored.

"Let's go higher!"  I urged my dragon in Dragonese, the language of the dragons. I laughed as we passed through the clouds, leaving the ground farther and farther behind.

Suddenly a streak of turquoise blue shot past. "Suckers!"   One of my friends, Cascade, teased as she and Morweena, her Tide Glider, flew by.

"Oh, no you don't!" Àma shouted, encouraging her dark purple Stormcutter, Mímir, to go faster.

Àma and Cascade came from the same island as most of us. Back when we lived on that island with other people, Àma had been the daughter of the chief. She isn't anymore though, but that's a really long story. Her red hair was pulled back into two braids like always, with a streak of purple running down the side of one. We all had a streak of our hair the color of our dragon.

Cascade and I had always been pretty close friends. Sure she's a little clueless at times, but she definitely makes up for it in fighting skill and loyalty. Cascade is fiercely loyal, and an amazing fighter. She has long, wavy blonde hair with a braided streak of turquoise that was currently pulled back into a ponytail. She always jokes that her hair cascades down her back.

"Ha! You guys don't stand a chance,"  Rowan taunted. Shadow, her dragon, was a Night Light, one of the fastest dragons in the Archipelago. They both knew it, too. "Come on, Shadow, let's win this." Rowan patted her dragon, and they shot up even higher.

All of us lived on the same island most of our lives, and we knew each other before the "Pirate" thing. All of us except Rowan. We met Rowan 3 years ago, before we became the Dragon Pirates. Rowan's two years younger than the rest of us, and I didn't really know that much about her. But she was my friend, and just like the others, I trusted her with my life. Rowan had long black hair and brown eyes, and after living with dragons for so long, she could practically see in the dark.

"Just because you have a Night Light doesn't mean you'll win!" Vera called.

Vera, short for Verdandi, is basically my sister. She and I had both been adopted by the same family. Neither of us really knew who our real families were, but we didn't care. We were practically twins, except for the fact that Vera was a few months older. Also the fact that I have auburn brown hair and she has blonde hair, but no one cares about details.

But then again, we were all sisters. Even the dragons. They were my family, and I was theirs.

"Yeah!" Vera's dragon, Arne, chirped with a smile. "We're catching you!"

Rowan snorted. "In your dreams!"

I smiled. I loved my friends. Some days we were the fearsome Dragon Pirates, the "Scourge of the Archipelago." But most days we're just us. A handful of teenage girls riding dragons and having fun.

"Wait a second," I mused, noticing someone missing. "Where's Kara?"

"In first!" I heard a familiar voice call. I whipped my head forward to see a pale pink Deadly Nadder come out of the cloud cover and take Rowan's place in first.

Kara is another one of my friends, and another one of the Dragon Pirates. She's fourteen, and she came from the same island as most of us. Her dragon, the Nadder, is named Rose. Kara is bubbly, caring, and an amazing friend. She has really, really long hair that goes all the way down her waist, its blonde and curly with a streak of light pink to represent her dragon.

"Hey!" Rowan complained. "That isn't fair!"

"Neither is having a Night Light!" Kara countered with a grin.

Realizing that my friends were completely distracted, I took the opportunity to win. I smiled when I spotted a familiar island. It wasn't just any island though. It was our island, Pirate's Nook.

"You ready to win this thing?" I whispered to Azure, my light blue dramillion.

"Always," she whispered back.

We ducked into the thick clouds and out of my friends sight. Azure dove down, swooping just barely over the trees.

"Ha-ha!"  I whooped, looking back at my friends. "We're so gonna win!"

Just as we were about to land on the platform that led to our huts though, a streak of red got there first.

"Think again Acacia!"  Vera mocked with a smirk.

I groaned. Azure landed next to her sister, Arne, the red dramillion that Vera rode.

Shadow landed and Rowan jumped off her back, playfully demanding to know who won.

"We did," Arne told her, just as Cascade, Àma and Kara landed.

"Oof," Àma said with mock pity, "You lost again Acacia?"

I stuck my tongue out at her. "It was the wind." I declared. "The wind screwed us up. Right Azure?"

"Definitely," My dragon said unconvincingly.

"Sure Acacia," Vera teased.

"Whatever," I said, ready to change the subject. "Who's making dinner tonight?"

"I am!" Cascade proclaimed.

"Cool," Kara said. Then she hopped back on her dragon. "Rose and I need to go check on the nests. We'll probably be back in an hour."

"I'm coming!" Àma announced.

"Ok," Kara agreed.

"Alright, so after dinner, you and I are on patrol, right Cascade?"  I asked.

"I believe so."

"Cool," Kara said. "We'll see you guys later! Don't get in any trouble while we're gone...." She grinned, than on their riders' signal, Rose and Mímir took off and the rest of us went our own separate ways.

A/N

Sorry if that was a little slow, but I needed to introduce the characters. I also apologize if all those new characters will be hard to remember.

But, the next chapter will be very exciting! So stay tuned....
