Part 4

Louis drove for long minutes before he considered the situation safe enough to park the car. By that time, the girls were whimpering in the back, still curled up on the floor, so he turned back towards them.

After checking that the doors were locked, he slipped back to them between the seats. The omega inspected their injuries. They were full of bruises, but thankfully none of them was from biting. He probably wouldn't have been able to shoot them if they got infected due to his omega nature. Louis made sure to wipe the bruises with a gentle hand, and if needed, he disinfected the scrapes on their skin before wrapping them up and putting bandages over them.

Louis also gave the girls a water bottle to share and watched with a sad smile as they almost immediately drank it. He then fed them, opening a few canned fruits and canned hamburger meat. He munched along with them but let the kids devour most of the food alone.

After that, he asked about what exactly happened. The older girl, Lily, who was ten years old, talked mostly. Her sister, the six years old Lizzie, just sadly whined along with the story. Lily told him that their stepfather took them with their mother from an island, where their pack resided with a boat. When asked, she didn't know why the man decided to leave, but Louis could hear how much she hated the alpha. She told how, for days, they moved around the seaside towns. After the sisters went to sleep one day at night, their stepfather hit their mother, fell to the ground and didn't move again. He cried a lot, begging her to wake up. That was what alarmed the sisters, then he grabbed the girls and ran from their hiding place, leaving their mother behind.

Lily remorsefully told how they begged to go back for her, but he just hit them and shouted at them. When the food supply was running out, he barely gave them some food, keeping it for himself. Not long before Louis found the girls, Lukas abandoned them. Louis was shocked to hear that but now was sure he did the right thing when he pulled that trigger.

After that, Lizzie fell asleep on one of the car seats, but Louis continued questioning the other child. From what he was told, he could see the island where they lived earlier sounded safe, and he had probably a good chance for survival there if he could bring the girls back in one piece. He asked Lily if she knew which island was that or if she knew the route back, but she shook her head. She said that she could probably navigate back to the port where they docked their ship in daylight but had no idea what the island was called.

That was still more than nothing, so Louis let her sleep. He sat on the middle seat and let the two little girls cuddle him in their sleep. They were probably attracted to his scent as any other kid would have been since he was an omega. Because his heat ended not long ago, his scent was probably still stronger, and that reminded them of their home. They slept soundlessly, feeling safe.

On the other hand, Louis tried to stay awake to see if more zombies came to where they were parked, so he could get back in the driver's seat and drive away if needed. But he failed soon, and fell asleep as well, lured into a fake sense of security to be in the presence of two other humans.

In the morning, Louis was the first one to wake. He gently patted the girls head to wake them too. He unpacked some chocolates and more canned fruit for breakfast. Once they were ready for hitting the road, he sat back in the driver's seat and made the girls sit in front as well. Lily was sometimes hesitant while giving directions as if she was not completely sure if they were going in the right direction, but soon Lizzie peeped, saying she remembered one or two buildings.

The fuel tank was completely empty by the time when the girls suddenly screamed out. Louis almost lost control over the vehicle, getting frightened by the loud shouts. Both girls were knocking on the window and yelling when he turned toward them.
