Drake’s POV

My mind went into complete shock when I saw who was standing in the hallway. There she was, kneeling against the doorway with one knee on her other. She smiled brightly and her eyes sparkled with joy. It seemed like there was a sun shining on her, even though we were in a room with no windows. It couldn’t be…..Clara?

“Clara?!” I screamed, restraining myself from jumping on her with excitement.

“YES DARLING, IT SURE IS!” She screamed with her southern accent, holding her arms open to hug me.

“What are you doing here?!” I shouted, a smile stretched across my face.

“Now, that’s none of yer business, darlin’! You should know better than that!” Clara laughed.

I ran over to her and squeezed her fragile little body.

“My, you’re gettin’ pretty big, aren’t ya?!” She smiled wide.

“Thanks Clara! I’ve missed you!”

“I’ve missed you too, darlin’. I miss the way we used ter run. Ahah.” She replied, hugging me as tight as she could.

I couldn’t believe my cousin Clara- scratch that, my best friend was right in front of my eyes! I haven’t seen her in 3 years! The last time I saw her she was running away from her home and stealing the little Ford truck my uncle Danny used to own. Damn, I loved that truck. It's nice baby blue seats and awesome transmition shift. That was an amazing truck.

One thing I HAVE to say is, if Clara wasn’t my cousin, I’d say she’s pretty sexy. Guys have ALWAYS been on top of her…literally. She has wavy blonde hair, light blue eyes, and she’s never had a pimple in her entire life. Clara always wears a cowboy hat on her head, because she wants the “regulars” to be scared. You see, my family is big-time western, but I gave up that accent. If I’m upset, I’ll usually start talking like she does. Clara’s probably 23 years old by now, and she looked like she always does…tough. No joke, Clara scared me when I was little. She’s the LAST person you would ever want to mess with. I can’t believe she’s here!!!

Clara’s eyes brightened and her straight-teeth smile shined. My emotions were going wild and I had a strong urge to scream like a girl. She’s given me so much advice while we were growin’ up, it’s not even funny! Every time I see her, she always has to give me a quote or something to look up too.

I remember the last time I saw her, she looked terrible. She had scars all over her body from Uncle Danny beating her up with a knife. Trust me; it hurts more than you think it does. Clara’s hair looked like it hadn’t been washed in 2 months and her hands were bleeding. I remember she had just given me the news that she was running away and I was on the verge of crying. She took my hand, looked into my eyes and said:

“Lil’ Drake, I wanna tell ya somethin’ before I go. You better listen close now, you hear? Life ain’t perfect. But, you just keep wishin’, boy. Cuz if you don’t, God isn’t gonna satisfy ya. You gotta earn your reward, you know. Do you think Johnny Cash got to get up on stage without ONE wish? Do you think Aunt Nat got outta jail for suckin’ that jack ass’s ding dong without wishin’ on a star? Nah. Keep yer faith…or else you won’t get nuttin’. I know somethin’ good will happen to ya. I know it. Just keep wishin. I’ll come back fer yer someday. I promise. Luv ya."

I remembered those words so clearly, it wasn’t even funny. For years, I’ve been wishing that I’d find a girl that I could trust and had the same life that I did, that way she’d understand. I always wish, every night, for the one. No offense to Lydia, I really like her, but she wouldn’t be able to retain my life and my past. She’s been through a wayyy better life than I have, so why would SHE be the one? It frustrates me because I keep my eyes open for the right girl, but it never works! But, I’m not gonna give up, just like Clara said.

My mind snapped back toward Clara, and Clara’s eyes began to lean towards Lydia.

“My, you’re being rude, boy?! Who’s this pretty young girl?” Clara shouted.

I laughed. “I’m so sorry Lydia! I’m just…overwhelmed right now. Clara, this is Lydia. Lydia, this is Clara.”

Clara made a face and narrowed her eyes. “Brianna? Is that you?”

Who?

Brianna’s POV.

CLARA?! Oh my god, this is NOT happening. CLARA? The person who SAVED MY LIFE when my mom tried to kill me that day at the liquor store?! The one who strangled my mom’s neck and her legs kicked so high, they could reach far enough to bruise my mom’s breasts? The girl who frightened my mom so much, my mom had nightmares for a whole MONTH? The chick who gave me inspiration to put up with my mom, no matter how much of a BITCH she is? The beautiful goddess that stood right there in that doorway? NO WAY!!! OH MY EFFING GOD!!!

She’s going to blow my cover! I can’t let her see my face; she’ll know right away who I am! No, I can’t let this happen, I just escaped! Hide Brianna, HIDE! I hid my face with my hands, and covered my hair over my skin. If she doesn’t see my skin color, maybe she’ll think I’m black. Oh wait my hands…Of course. I listened to Drake squeal with excitement, while her thick accent gleamed in her voice. Wait a minute, how did he know her? Oh, don’t tell me that she’s his old girlfriend; that would make me sick to my stomach. I trembled, trying not to open my cut more than it was. It hurt like HELL, but I’m not the one to complain, if you haven’t noticed. Cuts are immune to me. Wait, or am I immune to them? Ugh, this is just perfect; I always distract myself when I’m scared. DON’T LOOK AT ME CLARA!

“My, you’re being rude, boy?! Who’s this pretty young girl?” I heard Clara say. Oh shit, NO don’t look here! Ugh, forget it, I’m officially screwed.

“I’m so sorry Lydia! I’m just…overwhelmed right now. Clara, this is Lydia. Lydia, this is Clara.” Drake introduced.

Oh no.

I lifted a strand of my hair out of my face and gave her a small smile. I hope she doesn’t remember me. Please, don’t blow my cover, I can’t be blown!

Clara made a face and narrowed her eyes towards me. “Brianna? Is that you?”

Fuck.

“Uh…I don’t know who you’re thinking of, but my name is L-Lydia, n-nice to meet you.” I shivered.

Gosh, she is so scary. If you would’ve seen the way she tackled my mom and ripped her to shreds, you would’ve been the exact same way.

Clara tilted her head and smiled.

“Oh, I’m sorry darlin’, I thought you’s was another pretty girl that I met a while back. You wouldn’t happen to know ‘er would ya? She has nice, pretty hair like you do and boy, are her eyes magnificent?”

Oh no…”Uh, no, I don’t think I know her, sorry.” I replied, trying not to stumble.

“Well, that’s too darn bad. I haven’t seen ‘er in about a year and I remember her terrible mama. My oh my, it reminded me of the way my daddy used ter treat me. Poor girl. I hope she comes out of hidin’.” Clara spoke, raising her eyebrows at the last 7 words.

I raised my eyebrows and gulped. Oh shit. She remembers me.

I sighed. “Well, that’s a nice story. I feel bad for whoever that girl was.”

“Me too. I wonder how she’s been?” Clara asked, tilting her head while raising one eyebrow.

I nodded, figuring I shouldn’t talk to her now in front of Drake. Suddenly, a loud CRASH came from inside the store. WHOA! What was that?! It sounded like a bunch of pans falling onto the ground all at once. I took a deep breath, and quickly turned my head towards Drake who jumped from the noise.

"I'm alright!" Jack faintly shouted.

“Uh, I’m gonna leave you two alone. I gotta go check on Jack.” Drake shouted running back into the store.

So this is it. Just me and Clara….something tells me this isn’t going to be pretty.
