When I woke up to the sunlight seeping through the blinds of his trailer, I felt somewhat refreshed. For a change, I actually didn’t wake up to the sound of my mother screaming at me. That had to be a first in months. I sighed with a small smile on my face thinking about how proud I was of myself that I actually managed to escape from her cage.
Instead, I woke up to the smell of something impossible to describe. The mouthwatering smell immediately consumed my senses and I sat up to find Drake cooking something in his tiny kitchen. He was moving something around in a pan with a spatula in one hand and in the other grabbing a small box shaped can out from one of the cabinets above his head. He started sprinkling the black flakes onto whatever he was cooking.
While he was doing that, I couldn’t help but remember the kindness that he showed me last night when I had a terrible nightmare of my mother. The way his fingers cupped my cheeks, the way he looked at me with concern, the way he seemed like he actually cared about what I was feeling and didn’t haven’t another ulterior motive. The way he helped me when that guy tried to rape me, the way he offered me to have a place to say.
God damn. He’s done a lot. And all I’d done was criticize his motives for doing so. Although I have a feeling I’m still going to be constantly questioning him at every moment, it was nice to actually take a moment and think of all the things he has done for me so far.
I suddenly smiled wide and began to remove the blankets that were currently on me. Drake’s head suddenly turned towards my direction, taking his eyes off of whatever he was cooking and he gave me a wide smile back.
“Good morning sleepy head.”
I slightly huffed. “Morning to you too. What are you making?”
He furrowed his eyebrows in disbelief. “Can you smell woman? I’m making bacon and eggs.”
I shrugged. “Oh….what’s that?”
He gaped and put his spatula down after removing the small strips of brown things from the pan and putting them on a plate with paper towels on top of it. “You’re kidding me, right?”
I slowly shook my head while putting a hand on my hair to smooth it out. I didn’t want to look like a troll in front of him, especially since he was giving me that look. “No??”
He rolled his eyes and picked up one of the brown things. “Come here.”
I slowly walked over to him and took this brownish thingy out of his hand. I studied it for a minute, looking at the white line in the middle of it, the outside was a dark brown, and there were two huge brown lines surrounding the white line. I smelt it and recognized that the smell was the mouthwatering smell that I had indeed woken up to. I looked up at Drake to notice he was still looking at me.
I gave him a questioning look. “Why are you looking at me?”
He cleared his throat. “Because I want to see your face when you taste the most amazing thing in the world.”
I stared at the brown thing. How could this be the best thing in the world? He doesn’t make any sense. “I doubt this brown thing has that much potential.”
He laughed. “It’s called bacon. Try it.”
I gulped and glanced down at the brown thing. “You swear it’s good?” I asked him.
He nodded. “Promise.”
I took a deep breath and took a bite of the brown t- I mean bacon. And holy moly. As I chewed, I could practically taste the salt on the meat as it slowly dissolved into my mouth. I continued to chew and noticed it was a tad bit spicy, but it added good flavor to it. I smiled in satisfaction and looked up to find Drake’s mouth smiling back at me.
